Support Worker - Contract, fulltime July 10th – August 18th
Organization Overview
LDS is a growing, innovative, research-based, nonprofit charity serving children and youth with learning differences. In collaboration with academic institutions, LDS offers individualized, evidence-based programs that target student-specific learning and social-emotional needs. Our growing programs and services currently operate online, from our Learning Centres in East Vancouver and North Vancouver, from our mobile classroom LDS Access, as well as from various school locations. We provide sustainable, affordable and individualized programs to ensure that all children and youth have an opportunity to realize their full potential. Through early intervention, we support students at a critical time in their life, leading to profound, positive change in student life outcomes. We are scaling-up our organization and service provision with the ultimate goal to effect system change with material and wide-ranging societal benefits, and we are looking for more team members to help us reach this goal!
Contract/ Full-time: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8:30am – 4:30pm), from July 10th August 18th 2023:
Remuneration: $17.50 to $22.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience
About the role: Support workers are a part of our teaching and learning team and provide supervision and assistance to students with diverse needs who are categorized as mild to moderate based on their individual assessment and need individualized support in our small group learning environments such as summer camps. The Support Worker will develop the knowledge, skills, and aptitudes to:
  • Foster supportive and caring environments that address the diverse needs of each child
  • Work collaboratively with the team to maximize the potential of all learners.
  • Modify and adapt programming to be inclusive and supportive of students with diverse need
Tasks and responsibilities:
  • Supports students while at LDS and during outings (such as walking to local parks).
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Encourages students’ participation in classroom activities and assists students with daily goals such as writing, reading, and participating in camp activities.
  • Develops materials (such as visual reminders/ schedules/social stories) for students, depending on their needs.
  • Assists instructors and staff with small group programming and support individual students with diverse needs with academic work, social interaction, and behaviour.
  • Adapts material/instructions for students as directed by instructors and staff. Facilitates and encourages positive social interaction with students, staff and the community.
  • Attends and actively participates in planning meetings when necessary.
  • Support students with challenging behaviours
  • Facilitates independence in students with regards to basic life skills and provides support as needed.
Supervision: The Support Worker is supervised by the Director of Education (DoE) and supported by the Senior Manager, Education where appropriate. The Support Worker will have the opportunity to share ideas, tips, solutions, and support with the full instructional and staff team. The DoE will review the Support Workers performance and provide any recommendations regarding job performance and additional training. Additionally, the DoE and Lead Case Manager will offer mentorship to identify the mentee’s professional and career goals and adjust the mentoring process throughout the summer; provide support and coaching in areas of identified need; offer support and encouragement; and give professional feedback. 
 About you:
  • Ability to communicate
  • Criminal record check with vulnerable sector clearance (this can be obtained upon successful hire)
  • Being enrolled or having completed a program for becoming a special education assistant or behavioural interventionist is an asset.
  • Is reliable, and able to work as part of a team
  • A strong desire to work with elementary school aged children with diverse needs
  • Have some post-secondary education in the areas of: education; psychology; health; inclusion; or related areas.
  • Has experience working with elementary school aged children with diverse needs (work experience, volunteer experience, or practicum experience are examples of experience considered for this role)
  • The Support Worker must be available all weekdays during all camp sessions (6 weeks in July and August)
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English

Location: This position works primarily out of our East Vancouver office, which is located on good transit and bike routes, and has parking available.
