Shipboard Communication Systems Engineer

Position Summary
This is a hybrid position located in Ottawa, Ontario.
Thales is looking for a Systems Engineer who will have a demonstrated record of leadership and excellence and will possess the ability to successfully complete new challenges in multidisciplinary, collaborative environments.
In this position, as the Systems Engineer, you will be part of the Communication Systems Engineering team located in Ottawa, Canada and will provide system engineering support throughout the project execution cycle from specification and design, through development, integration, test and acceptance to integrate communication and mission systems on commercial and military platforms.
Key Areas of Responsibility

• Resolution of technical issues arising during the implementation, integration and testing of the system and subsystem elements; and
• Production of technical documentation to capture the system and subsystem designs including the architecture, interfaces and installation elements;
• Support the installation and acceptance testing of the systems remotely or on customer site.
• Support the development of verification and validation artefacts including plans and procedures;
• Requirements derivation and development for subsystem elements;
• Technical subcontract management including management of work scope and compliance of the (subcontractor) supplied solution;
• Development of the preliminary and detailed designs for system and subsystem elements;
• Implementation and integration of the system and subsystem designs;
• Requirements elicitation and decomposition towards subsystem elements including subcontracted items;

Minimum Requirements

• Flight Deck Communications.
• Familiarity with one or more shipboard communication systems on large vessels, such as:
• Ship’s Telephone System;
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required to succeed on multidisciplinary teams;
• University or College Degree in engineering, information systems or a related field;
• 5-10 years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in the commercial and/or military domains;
• Ability to obtain clearances as specified below under the Regulatory Compliance Requirements section
• Self-Powered Telephone; and/or
• Positive attitude with solution focused approach;
• Digital Switching Matrix;
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment while maintaining a strong awareness of commercial constructs; and
• Public Address and General Alarm;

Preferred Qualifications
In addition to the minimum professional experience specified above, experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

• Cybersecurity Compliance Frameworks (e.g. NIST, ITSG-33).
• Emanations Security (EMSEC);
• Networking – security, routing, configuration, etc.
• Any communications experience such as radios, SATCOM, cryptos, telephony;
• Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)/Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) (e.g. MIL-STD-461);

Physical Demands
Minimal lifting of test and electronic equipment, connecting equipment in a lab environment or job site (including onboard vehicle or vessel).
Special Position Requirements
Full time, standard business hours. Some on-site work required in the lab. Possibility of travel to customer site for technical support / installation.
