Network Engineer
Oshawa Power, a subsidiary of Oshawa Power & Utilities Corporation, and affiliate of fiber optic, district energy and renewable generation businesses, is the local hydro-electric distribution company that supplies electricity to more than 60,000 customers in the city of Oshawa. POSITION SUMMARY
As part of the Durham Broadband team, a small, growing and nimble organization, the Network Engineer is the resident expert on all things networking-related and oversees the architecture, planning, design, reliability, security, performance, and day-to-day operation of the enterprise network, including: core switching infrastructure, firewalls and Network Access Control. The Network Engineer will provide networking expertise and tier-1 support of the fibre network and its related systems and equipment, liaising with the NOC to coordinate all network operations including customer-facing trouble shooting activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
·Work independently and cooperatively within the technology team to deliver on departmental and organizational goals and strategies as the primary networking expert;
·Provide expertise, guidance and support to a team that includes, but not limited to service desk technicians, an infrastructure specialist, a developer, and a data manager;
·Provide engineering oversight of network architecture, planning, design, reliability, security, performance, expansion, maintenance, operation, repair, upgrade and renewal;
·Maintain, update, and secure all aspects of the network, including monitoring and remediating critical vulnerabilities and maintaining best practices, creating change requests and writing method of procedures to safely and methodically implement changes, both on and off hours;
·Implement and support day-to-day network operations, both on-prem and cloud;
·Maintain and create useful, accessible, network documentation that can be shared with internal users, other teams, and auditors;
·Support implementation of Telephony and VoIP services;
·Establish, evaluate and manage vendor relationships, service contracts and warranties;
·Work across the Oshawa Group of Companies to meet networking needs of new and existing sites across the GTA, recommending and implementing architecture designs based on business needs;
·Represent the organization as an engineering subject matter expert and technical authority;
·Work with the CTO as a subject matter expert to develop comprehensive and secure network architecture, expansion, renewal and upgrade plans; proactively address equipment obsolescence, modernization, redundancy and capacity requirements;
·Research, specify and approve equipment; ensure required functionality, system integration, interoperability, scalability and standards compliance;
·Develop comprehensive network maintenance, reliability improvement and security programs;
·Research, develop, recommend, implement, administer and maintain software, services, policies, appliances and other cyber-security-related controls;
·Maintain manual and automated monitoring and reporting for all aspects of the network;
·Recommend and implement changes for continuous improvements to the network;
·Be willing to occasionally work after business hours for production network changes and emergencies.
·Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- JNCIA or higher certification would be considered and asset;
- CyberSecurity certifications are considered an asset;
- CCNA or equivalent certification with proven intermediate routing and switching knowledge;
- Experience with Fortinet Products;
·Minimum 3 years ICT engineering experience, preferably with an ISP;
·Demonstrable knowledge and experience on VLAN, LACP, OSPF, Static routing, 802.1x, 802.11ac, DNS, DHCP, NTP, SNMPv3, NETFLOW, Spanning tree protocol, ACL, IPSec, SSL VPN and Site-to-site tunneling, VRRP, TFTP, SFTP;
·Strong leadership aptitude; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to listen to and motivate others;
·Self-starter; highly motivated and able to work and learn independently; asks for help when required;
·Excellent documentation and change control skills;
·Flexible work schedule; able and willing to work after hours on occasion to meet customer requirements or respond to major network issues;
- Experience in cyber security, zero trust network security, DLP, application security and SIEM is considered an asset.
- Experience with BGP considered an asset;
- Experience with fiber technologies such as: OTDR, Optical Power meter, GPON, Optical splitter, CWDM/DWDM is considered an asset;
- RuggedCom, Fortinet, Cisco, Juniper experience is an asset;
