Senior Manager, External Communications

The opportunity

Reporting to the Director, External Communications, the Senior Manager, External Communications will have the opportunity to play a leading role in the development and execution of the external communications strategy of the organization.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the investment division on announcing new investments and telling value creation stories within the existing portfolio. They will also manage proactive and reactive media relations and advise senior leadership on how to mitigate potential reputational issues.

Who You'll Work With

You will have the opportunity to interact with various senior level stakeholders across Ontario Teachers’, and collaborate with our global PR agencies and other external consultants.

What You'll Do

• Mentor, coach and provide oversight to other team members, with the potential to oversee direct reports either now or in future.
• Proactive and reactive media relations, including developing and pitching story ideas to top-tier global media and assessing and responding to inbound requests.
• Support annual and sustainability reporting activities.
• Plan for and support proactive opportunities including conferences, speaking engagements and programs hosted by Ontario Teachers’ for its investment teams and portfolio companies
• Work in partnership with the investment division and marketing and communications division to build out a global communications program to support organizational goals and objectives and build and reinforce our brand
• Planning, researching and preparing a variety of strategic/complex communication materials, including news releases, speeches, statements, key messages, brochures, web & social media content, presentations, etc.
• Support announcements related to new and existing investments across Ontario Teachers’ global portfolio
• Use creative thinking and knowledge of the news cycle and current events to develop useful and interesting communications that are valuable to a wide variety of audiences.

What You'll Need

• Bachelor’s Degree in Corporate Communications, Journalism or related field of study
• Excellent judgment and discretion when dealing with highly confidential materials.
• You will collaborate with our global offices and respond during off hours to business needs. Responsibilities may occur 24/7.
• Excellent written and oral communications skills, news judgment and knowledge of global events, with a focus on the investment industry
• Over 10 years of progressively responsible communications experience in a corporate or agency environment, with preference given to those with experience in the financial or investment industries.
• Deep experience in media relations and issues management having played a role as a trusted advisor to senior leaders on high-profile reputational risks and opportunities.
• Ability to translate complex concepts into simple and compelling language
• CSC accreditation and CIRI (Canadian Investor Relations Institute) association membership is an asset.
