Dalnavert Museum is seeking a Museum Programs and Communications Intern. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate seeking to develop experience in the museum sector with a particular focus on interpretation and communications, program development and delivery, and wider museum operations. The successful candidate will work closely with our Executive Director and management team to implement the museum's communications strategies, contribute to the creation and implementation of interpretive programming, deliver exceptional visitor experiences via tours and other activities, and contribute to Dalnavert's mission to promote and protect this National Historic site in critically engaging and challenging ways. Professional development opportunities, including training and mentorship delivered by members of Dalnavert's Board, will be provided in an effort to assist the successful candidate plan their career goals.
The primary tasks to be undertaken by the Museum Programs and Communications Intern are as follows:
- Work with the museum team to deliver programs, as well as working with the Executive Director in the design and development of the 2024 program schedule.
- Delivery of our components of Dalnavert's Communications Plan including coordination and creation of newsletters, website and social media content, and the creation of promotional marketing materials as required; contribute to communication planning meetings as required.
- Contribute to daily museum operations including assisting with volunteer support, setting event spaces, ensuring health and safety procedures are being followed, and other standard museum operation duties as required.
- Assist the museum team with the collections care program and develop an understanding of the basics of museum collection care; liaise with the collections team to develop engaging content related to artefacts and/or collections practices to be used to promote the museum and its activities.
- Deliver exceptional frontline visitor services, including providing tours and other recurring programs, processing admissions and other sales, and responding to visitor enquiries as needed.
Candidates interested in this position should demonstrate the following education, experience and/or skills:
- Experience working with artifacts and digital photography is an asset but not required.
- Higher level experience with popular social media platforms in a professional sphere (including relevant volunteer experience) a requirement and can be demonstrated with sample work; experience with social media as a brand tool an asset.
- Demonstrable experience in use of common design tools, multimedia, and related equipment/software strongly desired (e.g. Website development, Photoshop, Adobe Creative Suite, Digital Audio Recording/Editing).
- Computer proficiency, including standard tools such as MS Office.
- Excellent oral, communication and organizational skills, accuracy, attention to detail, friendly, open to learning, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Program delivery experience and/or ability to demonstrate relevant skills/experiences in a related area (project management and delivery etc).
- Upper-level University or College education in any of the following areas is preferred: Communication Arts, Marketing, Public Relations, Information Technology, Education, Museum Studies, Humanities (History, Canadian Studies, Political Science, Anthropology, Art History, and Fine Arts), or demonstrable skills and experience in a relevant professional sphere.
- Demonstrated interest in Canadian historical perspectives, e.g. social and political history, built heritage, material culture, interpretation and story-telling.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential, French and/or additional language skills an asset.
Note: Availability to work weekends and occasional evenings is a requirement.
This position is dependent upon funding approval from the Young Canada Works program. Applicants wishing to be considered for this position should be registered in the YCW in Heritage Organizations candidate job bank and must meet the following criteria:
- Unemployed or underemployed;
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- A college or university graduate;
- Registered in the YCW online candidate inventory;
- Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
- Willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment;
- Not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with YCW.
Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.
Interviews are expected to take place in late August 2023 with a view to the role beginning at the start of September 2023. Candidates may be required to show proof of a clear Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Check.
