Position:Manager Building Operations
Department:Abbotsford Canucks & Abbotsford Centre
Reports to: General Manager, Arena Operations
Term: October 2023 – October 2024
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Manager Building Operations ensures the efficient and cost-effective operation of the facility. Key responsibilities include overseeing day-to-day ice operations, engineering and building preparations and cleaning for all events at the Abbotsford Centre. The incumbent will make recommendations for new systems, additions, repairs, and replacements and will ensure that health and safety requirements are met. The Manager Building Operations is also responsible for supervising hourly Ice Engineers and contracted services, including but not limited to, refrigeration, HVAC, emergency services, housekeeping and parking.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Develop working relationships with both internal and external clients, ensuring that regular, ongoing communication is happening between all areas involved in Engineering and Operations
- Adjust hours of work, assignments, and priorities to maximize efficiency of operations and respond to existing workload
- Initiate, develop, and implement programs and systems relating to facility and equipment maintenance, including preventative maintenance and management
- Keep informed of trends and developments in the event industry through participation in various organizations and committees and ongoing learning
- Manage service contracts and partnership agreements for all repairs and preventative maintenance tasks for mechanical, refrigeration, and other operational equipment within the building.
- Oversee management of health and safety programs for staff, guests, and contractors
- Accountable for planning initiatives and strategies involved in leading the Engineering and Operations team to execute over 90 events annually, including Abbotsford AHL hockey games, concerts and entertainment events, corporate and special events, and internal events
- Provide Engineering and Operations teams with strong leadership, mentorship, and guidance in day-to-day plans and strategic initiatives
- Monitor and evaluate revenue and expenditures status on an on-going basis, preparing budget summaries and analysis as required
- Liaise with Game Operations team to ensure event requirements are supported
- Assist in the development and management of the departmental operating budget and capital projects
- Provide input in developing Department Operating Procedures Manual and ensure procedures are adhered to within department
- Responsible for operations and the Centre’s Part-Time employees (e.g., engineering, housekeeping, conversions, etc.) and carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Company’s policies and applicable laws
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of formal training including pressure vessels and refrigeration
- Must possess a Refrigeration Operator Certificate
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices associated with the area of facility maintenance and operations
- At least five years of experience in a supervisory role at a multi-purpose facility.
- Outstanding time management skills including the ability to prioritize clients, projects, and resources
- Experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a physical plant of comparable size and complexity in a computerized control environment
- A Fourth Class Power Engineering Certificate would be considered an asset
- At least 10 years of experience in ice maintenance and related ice-making equipment operations
- Strong administrative and computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office
