Role Overview

This role has overall responsibility for Canadian Legal and Government Affairs issues and for the attainment of Legal and Government Affairs strategic goals. The incumbent shall ensure that the Legal and Government Affairs function creates value, is cost efficient and contributes significantly to Carlsberg accomplishing its objectives and to the mitigation of material risks.

With the recent purchase of Waterloo Brewing, the incumbent will be involved in the legal amalgamation of our two companies and provide counsel on technical integration matters.

This role reports to the Finance Director for Canada with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Head of Carlsberg Group Legal.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Acting as Local Compliance Officer within the Carlsberg Global organization by managing risk and compliance and supporting implementation of compliance policies and training courses
• Providing legal opinion and advice on cross-functional matters related to Marketing, Sales, Human Resources, Tax etc.
• Assisting in all corporate legal issues, judicial disputes and cases. Managing disputes with external lawyers
• Lead all issues related to governmental affairs related to the industry including reviewing impact of pending regulations and master framework agreements, labelling requirements, environmental and other impacts at all levels of government
• Providing clear and focused advice on all legal, government affairs and regulatory matters
• Negotiating and reviewing leases and other property matters
• Working with external lawyers on specialized legal issues (e.g., competition, taxes, employment, etc.)
• Lead contact for all intellectual property, trademark, brand protection matters and routine management of trademark-related requests
• Negotiating, reviewing and drafting legal opinions and contracts related to commercial and co-manufacturing agreements

What We’re Looking For

• Ability to influence & drive results
• 5-8 years of related work experience, ideally from private practice and in-house legal experience
• Experience in Consumer Goods Manufacturing and Distribution an asset
• Negotiation skills
• Law degree from a recognized law school, member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
• Integrity
• Extensive MS Office competency especially MS Word and PowerPoint
• Excellent command of both written and spoken English with some fluency in French
• Analytical thinking
• Business focused with a good understanding of business strategy
• Proven skills in business partnering
