Director of Student Affairs


Position Overview


The Director of Student Affairs (DSA) is generally responsible for overseeing Student Affairs. The DSA is familiar with the B.C. post-secondary system, has experience working with international students, and is able to manage numerous and complex tasks exceptionally well.


ABOUT ALEXANDER COLLEGE:  


Alexander College is a private post-secondary institution serving approximately 4,000 students every semester. Alexander College offers a variety of undergraduate degree and transfer programs including University Transfer, Associate of Arts degree, and Associate of Science degree. An integrated English for Academic Purposes program is also available to assist non-native English speakers with their transition to university level studies in the English language. Alexander College is recognized and accredited by the BC Ministry of Advanced Education, Degree Quality Assurance Board (DQAB), BC Education Quality Assurance (EQA) program, and is a proud participant in the BC Transfer System, organized by the BC Council on Admissions and Transfer (BCCAT).

Work Week


Typical work hours will be held during regular business hours, Monday to Friday. However, occasional evenings, Saturdays, and overtime are required as well.


LOCATION:


Burnaby and Vancouver Campus, flexibility to travel between, and work at, campuses required.


Education & Experience Requirements


  • Experience working with faculty and students
  • Experienced public speaker
  • Competent technology and Microsoft Office Skills
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline
  • 2 years’ experience in an education administration role


Qualifications


  • Excellent interpersonal & relationship building skills
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and cordiality when working with others
  • Superior team work capabilities
  • Knowledge of the BC College and University system
  • Strong ability to take initiative and complete tasks as assigned
  • Excellent coordination & collaboration skills


Specific Responsibilities


  • Identify and implement required changes to college policy;
  • Contribute to reports for college committees and external bodies (e.g., SASC – Standing Academic Standards Committee, DQAB);
  • Participate in college committees and activities as needed;
  • Compile and submit quarterly and annual reports on Student Affairs, and as needed;
  • In conjunction with Human Resources, oversee staff hiring, supervision, and dismissal for employees within Student Affairs. Areas of supervision include WLC, SSS, Student Affairs, and Library;
  • Represent AC at professional Student Affairs organizations;
  • Work with college administrators to promote the college’s focus on student success & institutional effectiveness;
  • Arrange regular meetings for the Student Affairs Division to check in on progress, plan events, improve processes and meet Division goals;
  • Analyze, enhance, develop, and implement Student Affairs functions at the college.
  • Liaise with Division Managers and staff for these areas with regard to each Division’s effective operation;
  • Conduct regular staff performance evaluations for each Division Manager/Reporter within Student Affairs;


Student Affairs


  • May be involved in conducting expulsion hearings, ensuring that all relevant administrative processes are completed;
  • Consult with other Directors and college committees, as required.
  • Conduct hearings and disciplinary procedures with students regarding non-academic misconduct (behavioral issues in the classroom, etc.), ensuring that all relevant administrative processes are completed;
  • Regularly solicit student feedback regarding student success initiatives and college services, and use this in Divisional assessment;
  • Oversee completion of all appeal and complaint processes, including the inputting of information on the database, and communicating with relevant parties. This includes, and is not limited to: Attendance appeals, appeals for academic misconduct, grade appeals. Consultation with the Academic Committee (Dean, Provost) and Registrar’s Office may be required;
  • Be familiar with all college policy concerning appropriate student behavior (academic and non-academic) and the history of precedents on formal cases;


Other Duties


  • Act as signatory for college-related forms
  • Assist the Presidents, Provost and Dean in their duties and at their direction


Terms of employment will be governed by the policies and practices of Alexander College, as determined from time to time.
