Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) considerations are critical pieces of the overall corporate strategy of Canada Lands Company Limited and its subsidiaries (collectively, the “Company”). The Company recently conducted a materiality assessment, which elevated ESG strategic priorities at the corporate level, and developed a multi-year ESG Roadmap. The Roadmap includes ambitions, goals, and action plan for advancing ESG priorities across the organization.
As a subject matter expert, the Director, ESG will play a critical role in bringing the ESG Roadmap to life at the corporate level and advancing the work that has been done to-date. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, the Director, ESG will have a high visibility and levels of interaction with the Senior Management Team and the Board. The Director, ESG is responsible for facilitating ESG integration across all divisions of the Company, including Attractions, Real Estate, and Corporate/Shared Services. This includes, but is not limited to, leading topic-specific national ESG working groups, monitoring performance against targets, and co-leading ESG-related reporting and communications.
KEY FUNCTIONS
PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
- Responsible for implementing sustainability programs and leading cross-functional projects and process improvements; and
- Facilitating integration of ESG across the enterprise, including stakeholder engagement, risk management, and process improvement across all relevant ESG topics;
- Coordinating the implementation of the ESG program across the Company’s divisions and business units on a day-to-day basis;
- Leading the Company’s annual ESG Roadmap refresh process.
STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT:
- Providing advice on strategic projects and to operational teams related to sustainability;
- Leading, coordinating and facilitating the national ESG topic-specific working groups;
- Representing the Company in relevant public forums – conferences, industry and sector working groups, etc.;
- Acting as a subject matter expert to provide input into the ESG Roadmap and communicate this Roadmap to internal and external stakeholders;
- Working closely with all departments across the Company to ensure the integration of sustainability in various plans and initiatives, renovations, renewal projects and major capital projects; and
- Conducting ongoing engagement with regulators, government, CLCL employees, private sector partners, professional and industry associations, and NGOs;
- Promoting sustainability in day-to-day activities across the Company;
- Fulfilling other duties as may be assigned by the Chief Legal Officer from time to time.
- Thinking strategically in order to influence decision-makers and outcomes;
- With the VP of Corporate Communications & Public Affairs, developing a consistent market narrative to align purpose, strategy and ESG across company internal and external communications;
- Visiting the Company’s various projects, offices, and attractions to assess current practices;
ANAYLTICS AND REPORTING:
- Monitoring global and national trends impacting ESG performance and stakeholder expectations, and sharing best practices with the Senior Management Team;
- Monitoring progress against targets and corporate ambition, and taking action to address any required course corrections;
- Preparing reports for the Senior Management Team and Board.
- Implementing the appropriate processes to collect, analyze and manage ESG data; and
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience in implementing ESG strategies required.
- Advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint required.
- Knowledge of and direct experience with LEED (Canadian Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification program.
- Minimum of seven years of experience working in the sustainability or ESG field, including environment, social initiatives, and reporting. Experience in real estate and hospitality industries is an asset.
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in one of the fields of sustainability, environmental sciences, business administration, engineering or comparable field required.
- Experience with complex stakeholder engagement initiatives, transformation and change management is an asset.
- Strong analytical, research, analysis and synthesis of information skills.
- Strong leadership skills and experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Bilingualism (English/French) required.
- Strong knowledge of provincial and federal carbon reduction initiatives.
- Experience with ESG reporting frameworks required, including Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), and Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
- Demonstrated ability to provide sound guidance and advice to all levels of management.
- Strong strategic planning and execution skills.
- Understanding of applicable environmental legislation, regulations, and standards.
