COMPANY OVERVIEW
Hockey Calgary is a member of Hockey Alberta and is the governing body for all minor hockey in Calgary from U7 to U21 (ages 4 to 21). Hockey Calgary is the largest Minor Hockey Association in Alberta and one of the largest in North America. Hockey Calgary has 19 member organizations with over 13,000 players, 3,000 coaches and 1,200 officials. Hockey Calgary prides itself in finding ways to grow the game and ensure a positive and fun experience for everyone involved.
Description:
We are currently looking for an individual who is outgoing, hardworking and has a passion for the game of hockey. This individual must be able to build relationships, work in high stress environments and be able to work on several different projects at once. This person must have a strong sense of hockey development principles and be willing to work evenings and weekends.
The Coordinator, Hockey Development is responsible for the planning and implementation of activities related to hockey operations as well as the development of programs compliant with the standards set by National and Branch levels. They will have a great deal of involvement in Coach and Player development initiatives. In this role they will help develop and promote Hockey Calgary initiatives, policies and programs to greatly enhance the consistency and overall hockey experience.

REPORTS TO: Manager, Development and Hockey Operations
POSITION TYPE: Full Time
Operations
- Oversee day to day operations of the Hockey Calgary Skate Sharpening Shop
- Assist the Hockey Calgary Provincial process - Communication, hosts, winners, etc.
- Assist in providing guidance and support to Member Organizations and Councils as it relates to areas of responsibilities (Player/Coach development, seeding/reseeding, etc.)
- Assist with seeding and reseeding activities for Community Council.
- Oversee usage and schedule of the Hockey Calgary Gym located at Max Bell
Player Development
- Develop and plan new player skill development initiatives.
- Assist with on-ice delivery of key development programs such as ‘Timbits Learn to Play’
- Offer support to community partner programs such as Football Hockey Link and HEROS Hockey.
- Work with the Manager, Development and Hockey Operations to develop seasonal plan of all Player Development activities.
- Support HA and our member associations in improving the delivery of player development programs for our athletes.
Recreational Hockey Stream
- Lead the House League Jamboree
- Support operational program standards for the RHC Program
- Develop, implement and support operational program standards for the Flames Community House League and RHC Programs
Grow the Game
- Work with Associations to enhance and support their grow the game initiatives
- Assist to recruit, train and support instructional staff for growth initiatives such as the ‘First Shift’ and the ‘Jr. Flames Program’
- Support programming elements of the Pathway to Participation (First Shift, Jr. Flames Program, etc.)
Coach Development.
- Work in field with coaches (with the support of our Associations) to improve their understanding and knowledge of Long-Term Player Development (LTPD).
- Develop and lead the Hockey Calgary Coach Night Series (seminars).
- Provide leadership and support to Coach Mentorship Programs being run at Association level.
- Assist in developing seasonal plan of all Coach Development activities.
- Build and strengthen the Coach/Coach Director network within Hockey Calgary
- Provide leadership and direction to Member Organization Coach Directors.
- Spend time in the arenas working with coaches as necessary
Other Related Duties
- Chair the Coach/Player Development Directors Committee
- Review and update contacts in the Hockey Calgary Rolodex and Contact Lists as they relate to areas of responsibility (Coach Directors, Player Development Directors, League Chairs, Governors, etc.).
- Assistance at Hockey Calgary events
- Attendance at AGM and other councils, as well as any other meetings that may require information or support.
- Other duties as requested by the Manager, Development and Hockey Operations
Qualifications
- Able to present themselves professionally and communicate appropriately.
- Have the ability to work under pressure and prioritize accordingly.
- Comply with the association’s policies with regards to screening (e.g. Criminal Record Checks) and conflict of interest.
- Ability to work efficiently, constructively and independently while managing tasks and time spent in a responsible and accountable manner.
- Have exceptional interpersonal skills – the ability to interact with board, members, volunteers, sponsors, media, staff and general public.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required (there is a great deal of evening and weekend work throughout the winter season).
- Be a self-starter, possessing strong interpersonal and organizational skills and be able to effectively handle numerous tasks with tight deadlines.
- Experience working in a sports environment, having developed and implemented development programs would be an asset
- Have a strong proficiency with Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, knowledge of internet and web applications, as well as specialty software designed for the sport of hockey.
- Have a demonstrated ability to work with volunteers, and an ability to create and maintain successful relationships.
- Possess extensive knowledge of hockey fundamentals and development tactics.
