Future Ready Premium Program, Career Coach


The Future Ready Premium Program (FRPP), Career Coach r eports to the Manager, Career and Student Success Advising and is a member of the Student Success Initiatives team. In alignment with Mohawk College’s mission and values, the incumbent fosters student engagement and success through the coordination and delivery of student professional development and career coaching services for students.


As a primary point of contact for full-time students, graduates, and CE students seeking career information, the incumbent must be able to respond to, investigate and resolve a diverse number of inquiries from students, staff, faculty, and other departments. The incumbent must also develop strong relationships and work collaboratively with staff in Academic areas, Student Services, the Mohawk Students Association and other campus partners on all Mohawk Campuses.


The incumbent will be the primary point of contact for the Future Ready Premium Program on MyCanvas, supporting students as they complete their modules towards their micro-certificate, and collecting data related to student uptake in the course.The incumbent will also support students through the promotion and support of other FRPP activities and events.


Responsibilities


The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:


Career Coaching - Provision of ‘direct service’ of student professional development and coaching services, detailed in the Student and Graduate Employment Operational Plan and in alignment with the Mohawk Advising Model and professional standards of the International Coaching Federation and Career Development Professionals.


Coaching Also Includes


Based on the Mohawk Advising Model and Career Development Strategy, the scope of practice for ‘coaching’ is defined by primarily ‘explanatory’ advising.‘Transactional/Prescriptive’ advising is also well within the scope of practice for coaching as well. More complex ‘Developmental’ advising may occur from time to time in small ways, but in depth developmental work should be referred to Advisors or Counsellors.


  • Drop-in coaching sessions – allotting time each week to meet with students who arrive with questions who did not book a session ahead of time.
  • Group coaching sessions – scheduling and promoting open sessions (or presentations) on a regular basis to groups of students on timely topics.
  • Pre-scheduled coaching sessions – meeting with students who have booked time with the incumbent.
  • Session Notes and Data Capture – keeps detailed interaction and session notes using the college’s current student relationship management software (eg. Orbis - CareerReady) and ensuring notes are in compliance with departmental and college guidelines and policies. Keeps regular counts of advising and support activities and submits regular (i.e. monthly and annually) reports to Manager, or Director as required.
  • Alternative coaching sessions (e-mail, phone, or online) – providing advising to students (individual, group or drop-in) over the phone or using technologies such as Zoom, Skype, MS Teams etc.


Coaching will be primarily focused on, but not limited to, students who are accessing the Future Ready Premium Program course on MyCanvas.


Outreach and Integration in the promotion of Student and Graduate Employment information, services, events, activities and programs, in particular the FRPP.


  • Prepares material, organizes and delivers presentations to stakeholders.
  • As required, develops and maintains up-to-date student resource material (leveraging the online student portal when possible) for small-group sessions throughout the year.
  • Responds to requests within the college community to promote opportunities and student services programs by presenting to groups in the community.
  • Encourages clients to leverage online solutions whenever possible to ensure that in-person interactions are reserved for value-added services/transactions.
  • Collaborates with College partners to identify/resolve any issues related to students.
  • Under the direction of the supervisor, ensures the current procedures for students are accurate and reflected in practices within Student Services
  • When necessary, updates documentation on practices/processes, in clearly outlined and straightforward print and online material
  • Drafts menus or checklists of activities/processes for students to complete to begin their job search and career preparation successfully, and submits to the supervisor for revision and approval.


Events – Supports FRPP student outreach events, while providing support to other events offered by the Student & Grad Employment team.


  • Events are often jointly coordinated with other team members and partners on campus, particularly the Student and Graduate Employment Career Advisor, Alumni office, and others.
  • Applying basic principles of project management to ensure effective implementation and delivery of programs and activities.
  • Provides event reports reviewing event and highlighting recommendations.


Qualifications


The successful applicant will have:


  • At minimum, candidates must have a two-year post-secondary diploma. Candidate must have a credential in Career Coaching/Development/Education or equivalent. Additional certificates or designations in Teaching, Adult Education or Student Affairs would be an asset. Preference will be given to candidates with increasing levels of experience and education.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
  • A minimum of 2 years of practical experience providing career coaching/advising, including one-to-one and group/workshop formats within a post-secondary setting is required. Experience facilitating peer-to-peer student leadership programs would also be an asset.


Skills


The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and attitudes obtained through their previous work experience


  • Approachable and Relatable to all members of College community - Ability to positively relate to students, faculty, staff, administration and the general public in a variety of situations (one-to-one and groups) is essential;
  • Diversity – Demonstrated experience working with and supporting a diverse student/client population;
  • Team-Oriented - Demonstrated intrapersonal skills and an ability to work effectively in a team environment is essential.
  • Knowledge of Post-Secondary Education Systems - Knowledge of College programs, Student Policies, Student Support Services, Student Success Initiatives, and corporate databases including FAST, Banner or similar student information management systems would be an asset.
  • Strong Organization and Multi-Tasking Skills – ability to manage multiple student tasks, projects and issues at the same time. Knowledge or experience with project management would be an asset.
  • Computer Proficiency/Experience - Proficiency in/experience with business computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel plus Internet researching skills, virtual platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, and basic familiarity with office procedures is necessary.
  • Language and Communication Proficiency – Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Event Planning/Project Management – demonstrated experience coordinating workshops, events and managing projects;
