Health Promotion & Student Support Officer


Reporting to the Supervisor Health Promotion and Screening, the incumbent is responsible for supporting the implementation of health promotion initiatives across the college and supporting student well-being, including online student engagement, on-campus health promotion programming, and providing surge support to the Case Management team.


This position will focus on implementing evidence-based health promotion programming and activity across all campus locations, with a focus on health conditions and behaviours that interfere with student success in young adult populations.The incumbent is key to increasing capacity for activity at satellite campus’, increasing infrastructure for targeted health promotion activities aimed towards priority populations, and a further emphasis on maintaining and expanding the digital health promotion presence (social media, in addition to expanding to other online engagement opportunities). This position will further improve capacity to execute population-based needs assessments to determine priority needs and ensure data-driven programs are implemented in alignment with the CSA National Standard for Mental Health and Well-being for Post-Secondary Students.


The incumbent will also provide backup to our case management team, ensuring we have adequate surge resources to support times when students require high level support.


Responsibilities


The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:


Health Promotion Implementation


  • Working in consultation with the Supervisor, engages in program planning and evaluation for the implementation of the CSA National Standard for Mental Health and Well-being for Post-Secondary Students (e.g. situational assessments, environmental scans)
  • Review the literature and engage with community of practice to monitor emerging trends and best practices which may inform resource development and programming
  • Plans and implements health promotion events, workshops, and outreach activities within the college community, with other Health and Wellness Centre staff, peer-to-peer programs, and community agencies using a variety of theories (e.g. behavior change theory, social marketing, media communications, community capacity building)
  • Supports the development of educational workshops and student-employee training and development projects.
  • Communicates effectively with individuals, groups, and partners from the campus community to transfer public health knowledge and skills
  • Collaborates with interdepartmental partners as a part of health promotion activities at the college


Digital Student Engagement and Health Communication


  • Creates and maintains digital Health and Wellness outreach, including awareness campaigns related to the stepped care model, health promotion, and community partner campaigns to promote health and well-being for students in College, and community resources related to student health and wellness; (including Good2Talk, DrinkSmart, Smokers Helpline, HPV awareness, etc) that promote health and well-being for Students in College and community resources related to student health and wellness
  • Supports website revisions and content creation
  • Generates digital assets related to health promotion and departmental priorities including web page materials, media screens, printed materials, and social media marketing
  • Supports nurses, including booking space, scheduling activities and promotion of events
  • Gathers, compiles, and synthesizes evidence-based information to develop effective health promotion communications for a diverse group of students in the college community
  • Supports departmental placement students in design and implementation of health promotion activities through independent learning initiatives, outreach, and presence at fairs and events
  • Designs engagement initiatives for online delivery


Wellness Care Navigation


  • Meets with students to complete consent forms on behalf of health services. Other duties as assigned to optimize service provided by the student wellness team.
  • Meets with students to complete paperwork for community referrals and provide wellness check-ins while students are on wait lists for community programs.
  • Reaches out to students with health concerns or requesting health advocacy, including but not limited to COVID-19, illness, pregnancy or other health issues. Provides case management support, advocacy and wellness check-ins for students.
  • Provide support to the student wellness team by assisting students with system navigation, community referral, and wellness check-ins.

Qualifications


The successful applicant will have:


  • Experience with event coordination and planning.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
  • Candidates with international medical skills and credentials are also encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent customer service and support skills.
  • Digital content creations skills using programs such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, such as Microsoft office and Excel. .
  • ASSIST or SafeTALK and Mental Health First Aid training is an asset.
  • A minimum of one year of experience working with engaging post-secondary or youth populations.
  • A three-year diploma or degree in a health promotion, public health, life sciences, or another health field.
  • Experience with social marketing is an asset.
  • Experience with basic graphic design is an asset.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities and those with mental health concerns.
  • Experience with a variety of social media platforms including Instagram, Tik Tok, LinkedIn.
