Health Promotion Specialist


Reporting to the Supervisor, Health Promotion and Screening, the Health Promotion Specialist is a solution-focused, innovative collaborator who works to conceptualize, develop, implement, deliver, and evaluate initiatives designed to support and engage students in maintaining and enhancing their overall health and wellbeing.


This position will focus on implementing evidence-based health promotion programming and activity across all campus locations, with a focus on health conditions and behaviours that interfere with student success in young adult populations. The incumbent will work within an interdisciplinary team, and across the College, to assess the wholistic health and wellbeing needs of the Mohawk community, advocate for improved resources and policies that promote health and wellbeing and ensure a variety of modalities for delivery that reflect different ways students engage in the post-secondary context. A key facilitator of the Okanagan Charter, and strategic priorities within the College, the Health Promotion Specialist will work to operationalize these principles in programs and initiatives which foster help seeking behaviours, develop agents of change and wellbeing, and equip the College community to effectively support student health and wellbeing.


Responsibilities


The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:


Health Promotion


  • Design, implement and evaluate programs and initiatives which inform, engage, support, and connect members of the Mohawk College community to build capacity for health promotion and wellbeing using a variety of theories (e.g. behavior change theory, social marketing, media communications, community capacity building)
  • Ensure currency of health promotion standards/content through literature review and engagement with communities of practice to monitor emerging trends and best practices which may inform resource development and programming
  • Design and coordinate learning opportunities that foster health promotion change agents to support future citizens with the capacity to promote health beyond campuses; consider the social determinants of health as well as evidence-informed, student-centred, anti-oppressive and culturally safe principles in developing strategies and approaches


Health and Wellbeing Education and Communication


  • Identify, create and maintain engaging social media and a digital presence for the portfolio through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, to promote College and community resources related to student health and wellbeing to support healthy behaviors and communities.
  • Conduct a systematic review of digital information and web presence of student health and wellbeing initiatives, informed by deep data analytics and engagement data – ensure web content remains current, simple, and aligned with student / stakeholder engagement and needs from digital information.
  • Create reporting metrics to advise on the success of current campaigns to guide future marketing initiatives.


Strategic Initiatives and Reporting


  • Work with management and campus stakeholders to identify strategic plans and to determine short and medium-term operational priorities for wellbeing program initiatives.
  • Engage with community agencies alongside the Wellness Care Coordinators to develop collaborative programs and referral pathways.
  • Contribute to Ministry reports outlining initiatives and community impact


Administrative Support


  • Provides support to the ongoing updating of the Health and Wellness Centre webpage, ensuring information is up to date and in compliance with related regulations around marketing the provision of health care.
  • Arranges meetings, orders supplies, participates in event planning, swag ordering and facilitates work orders as required.
  • Foster and engage in collaborative, professional, and cooperative working relationships with colleagues in the Health and wellness Centre portfolio and other integral areas of the College (Events, SRRO, Student Life, ALS, etc.).
  • Duties as otherwise assigned


Qualifications


The successful candidate will have:


  • Experience with design and social media platforms; Canva, Photoshop, Instagram, Tik Tok, etc.
  • Candidates with international medical skills and credentials are also encouraged to apply
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with engaging post-secondary or youth populations.
  • Excellent knowledge of promising practices in health and wellbeing education, including traditional instruction, on-line learning, video, social media, web, and print. Strong understanding of program efficacy in wellness programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and evaluate wellbeing programs which translate student development, health promotion, and health behaviour change theory to practice.
  • Experience with basic graphic design is an asset
  • Experience with social marketing is an asset
  • Knowledge of Canadian Mental Health Standard, Okanagan Charter, and relevant privacy legislation (i.e., FIPPA, PHIPA).
  • Excellent knowledge of best practices in program development, implementation, and evaluation
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Excellent conflict resolution, interpersonal, client relationship, and communication skills (oral, written, and presentation).
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
  • University degree in an academic discipline that is transferrable to the role such as. Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Counselling, Nursing, Life Sciences
  • Ability to engage and build rapport with various stakeholders and members of the college community.
  • Knowledge of intersectional, anti-oppressive and anti-racist practices relating to mental health, harm reduction, social-emotional learning, and suicide prevention.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities and those with mental health concerns
  • Good knowledge of principles and practices of administration in a post-secondary educational environment. Proficient in the use of word processing, and spreadsheet applications, e-mail, internet searching, and website management.
