Instructor, Drums - Part Time

The successful candidate will be required to plan and teach the following


The Department of Music (Creative Industries) invites applications for the position of part-time instructor in Drums and Percussion.


  • Potentially teach non-pitched percussion to drum majors, as needed, in the Applied Music program.
  • Potentially teach a drum masterclass for drum majors in the Applied Music program.
  • Drum set one-on-one lessons with drum majors in the Applied Music program.


Under the direction of the Associate Dean, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing academic and practical leadership and for developing an effective and nurturing learning environment for students.


Start date: September 2023 (courses may run Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 10:00pm)

Responsibilities


The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Create a positive, engaging and inclusive learning environment for students, in person and online, incorporating the use of educational technologies and principles of universal design for learning (UDL) as appropriate.
  • Experience with the use of Canvas platforms is an asset but not required.
  • Employ a variety of teaching and learning strategies that promote active learning and development of technique, musicality, language/diction, and ensemble skills.
  • Assess industry trends and student feedback, revising approaches and repertoire as required.


Qualifications


The successful applicant will have:


  • Experience in the contemporary music scene, in a variety of musical styles, as a performer and/or educator.
  • Open to working with diverse student interests and stylistic preferences.
  • Prior teaching experience at the post-secondary level, specifically in drums.
  • Candidates must also be committed to working within a team environment and to participating in a consultative decision-making process.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.


The successful candidate must have an ability to relate theoretical knowledge and practical applications through innovative delivery methods so as to provide a meaningful learning environment for students of diverse backgrounds and ages. The ability to work as a part of a team and demonstration of excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.


Faculty members hired at Mohawk College must be prepared to teach with a learner-centered approach and to assist in the development and application of alternate delivery methods.


Part time faculty positions are part of Mohawk College’s response to the Calls to Action in Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Report, and as part of our commitment to our Indigenous Education and Initiatives Plan, preference will be given to Indigenous Peoples or Peoples of Turtle Island, including those who identify as First Nations (status or non-status), Metis & Inuit.


Candidates should have experience and knowledge of Indigenous education, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and EDI in curriculum/program development, teaching and learning.
