The Work
The Associate Director, Commercial Credit is responsible for managing and supervising a group of commercial real estate credit professionals (senior underwriters, associates, and administrators) with the goal of providing optimum client service and assisting with the achievement of anticipated department annual financial objectives. In addition to managing their own team, the Associate Director will assist the Director, Commercial Credit in the oversight and management of $3.0B in annual underwriting of complex conventional commercial and construction mortgage loans secured by all major asset classes in markets throughout Canada. The Associate Director is also responsible for communicating and co-operating with external Business Partners, Lending Partners, Clients and Brokers as well as staff within the Credit & Risk Management group and other internal departments. Alongside the Vice President, Commercial Credit and Director, Commercial Credit, the Associate Director will take an active role in the review and assessment of new deal opportunities presented by the Commercial Originations team.
The Core Parts Of Your Role Would Be To
  • As a senior member of the team, the Associate Director, Commercial Credit shall be relied upon to complete final review of credit documents generated by the team, prior to submission to Credit Risk for decisioning.
  • Communicate with internal contacts (Senior Management, Underwriters, Administrators, and Commercial Funders) and external contacts (Lending Partners, Brokers and Clients) to ensure transactions are processed in a timely and efficient manner in order to deliver superior customer service.
  • Working in conjunction with the Director, Commercial Credit, help lead standing deal meetings with executive management and recommend new deal opportunities requiring their concurrence.
  • Review and analyze all commercial mortgage reviews and proposals submitted by the team (including originations, amendments and/or updates), together with supporting credit related documentation. Attention must be made to ensure that compliance with the company’s established lending guidelines, procedures and regulatory requirements (including AML/ATF requirements) is adhered to. The incumbent is responsible to ensure all criteria has been satisfied on underwritten commercial mortgage reviews and outstanding documentation/conditions, if any, are being met in a timely manner. As a senior member of the team managing a group of seasoned credit professionals, many of the reviews will be comprised of complicated loans requiring higher levels of approval. The incumbent will be required to guide the team in proactively identifying risks and creatively mitigating to safeguard the Bank’s interests, all while adhering to established policy guidelines.
  • Lead Credit Risk Management Committee meetings and present transactions requiring that level of approval, per the Bank’s delegated authority policies.
  • Lead their team by providing support, guidance and mentoring. The incumbent will be the first point of contact for Senior Management and will be responsible for ensuring that their team adheres to company policy and guidelines as well as regulatory requirements. The incumbent will also be the person responsible for resolving day to day department challenges, assess individual staff member training needs and ensure that they are met so that the individual is able to perform his/her job effectively.

  • Minimum 5-7 years of complex construction and commercial real estate lending experience with 5 years of advanced management experience
  • Post-secondary education (diploma/degree) in business or finance.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate to Senior Management and Partners in a clear, concise and professional manner
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proven ability to thrive in a constantly changing environment and to perform well in a high volume, high intensity environment with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities
  • Advanced technical knowledge of commercial lending, financial statement analysis and factors affecting the Canadian commercial lending environment.
  • Working knowledge of AML/ATF regulations and Corporate/Legal documentation (both direct and partner originated transactions) for commercial real estate in multiple jurisdictions across Canada

The incumbent will be working hybrid and in office time will be spent working from Equitable Bank’s additional office space located at 351 King Street East, Toronto, ON.
