Job Description


Job Summary:


The Director, Commercial Strategy will assume a key role within the Americas Commercial team by providing expert level strategic, financial modeling, benchmarking, analysis, interpretation, and recommendations to support management decision making with respect to the acquisition of battery materials and the marketing of recovered commodities and battery grade chemicals. This role will also provide broader strategic support and alignment in approach with Li-Cycle’s global Commercial teams.


We are seeking a talented and motivated top performer to join our team in this role who brings commercial experience in a B2B environment and who is comfortable interacting with various levels of management.


Primary Responsibilities:


  • Product & Service profitability analysis
  • Financial competitive benchmarking
  • Market analysis and intelligence, targeted at understanding market opportunities and threats, competitor positioning and sources of competitive advantage and weakness in the development of bid and sales strategies with key customers
  • Development of bid strategies, pricing models and recommendations relating to key customer negotiations;
  • Development of strategies that facilitate the evolution of the LiB recycling commercial constructs, including price discovery, benefits & detriments of sector commoditization
  • Interaction with the Corporate Finance department to ensure that financial models are compatible with corporate requirements and objectives
  • Development of financial analysis and recommendations associated with major bid submissions and contract negotiations
  • Customer profitability analysis
  • Lead the commercial component of the monthly integrated business planning process and the annual budgeting process
  • Financial tool and dashboard development for streamlining commercial activities
  • Support commercial engagement efforts with suppliers of spent lithium-ion battery materials and purchasers of advanced offtake materials who will often be the same customer in a closed-loop recycling and resource recovery business relationship:
  • Work closely with the Finance FP&A team to develop and continuously assess operational performance and conduct business process financial modelling and cost benefit analysis aligned to current and planned operations performance
  • Preparation of detailed approvals documentation for commercial agreements, and preparation of detailed plans to successfully deliver on new commercial opportunities
  • Maintain a portfolio view of all commercial commitments to monitor value by customer, market segment, region, material type


Job Qualifications:


  • Experience in the recycling, mining, resource recovery or battery industries is preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of experience including the development of business cases, financial contract analysis or related financial analysis experience
  • Ability to follow through and complete overlapping projects
  • Excellent presentation and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel within North America to visit facilities, customers, partners, conferences etc.
  • Excellent organizational, strategic, planning and implementing skills
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
  • University Degree in Business, Economics, Accounting or Engineering
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts
  • Prior experience in a management consulting role is preferred
  • Able to identify key issues; creatively and strategically overcome internal challenges or obstacles
  • Experience of building and effectively communicating business strategies to key internal stakeholders
