Job Description

UPS is looking for a Vice President of Corporate Affairs, based in the UPS Canada HQ in Mississauga, Ontario. The Vice President of Corporate Affairs is responsible for government relations, advocacy and external communication related to public policy, analyzing legislation that impacts UPS, advising UPS on relevant public policy developments, and maintaining and developing internal and external relationships supporting our public policy work. In addition to overseeing a Director of Public Affairs in Ottawa, the Vice President of Corporate Affairs provides local management support to the Canada Communications and Community Relations teams.

We are seeking a government relations expert with experience in public policy and/or public affairs, who is open to engaging closely in the day-to-day business activities of a major transportation and logistics service provider in Canada, and who is motivated to cultivate a collaborative working environment within the Corporate Affairs function, as well as with other departments. The Vice President will engage with federal, provincial, and municipal government officials and policy makers on behalf of UPS, and report locally to the President of UPS Canada, in Mississauga, Ontario and functionally to the Vice President of International Corporate Affairs in Atlanta, Georgia.

Qualifications:

Background

  • Experience developing and executing public policy advocacy strategies, and working with federal, provincial and municipal level policymakers in Canada.
  • At least 15 years of relevant experience working in a corporate affairs or in-house government relations role, government, public policy, NGOs, think tanks, trade associations, or communications.
  • Experience and expertise in any of the following areas: transportation, customs affairs, sustainability, labour and employment, international trade, healthcare, technology and digital affairs.
  • Experience in internal management and external leadership roles, public speaking engagements, chairing discussions, overseeing committee activity, or as a board member.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent.
  • Track record of highest standards of ethics, and excellent judgment.

Skills

  • Ability to identify emerging and relevant policy issues, and work with internal stakeholders to assess potential impact to business and develop appropriate advocacy strategies.
  • Outstanding oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to develop clear, accurate and compelling written communications, talking points, briefing memos and reports, comfortable engaging directly with government officials at all levels.
  • Ability to organize and staff Corporate Affairs events e.g. C-Suite meetings with government officials, UPS events with government guests.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, and to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively communicate relevant business priorities and perspectives as they relate to public policy developments to external stakeholders.
  • Self-starter, comfortable navigating within a large matrix organizational structure.
  • Agile and adaptable thinker, who demonstrates attention to detail, and ability to balance input from various sources before developing and executing an appropriate advocacy strategy.
  • Third party relationship management e.g. trade associations, consultants.
  • Main working language will be English. High proficiency or fluency in French is an advantage.
  • Comfort managing multiple files simultaneously, and balancing participation in internal business engagements and reporting with external relationship-building and presence.

Ambition

  • Openness to combining traditional corporate affairs activity with active participation in the day-to-day management of UPS’s business operations across Canada, collaborating closely with leaders from a variety of operational departments.
  • Desire to engage in general management discussions and provide input to business strategy, finance, operational and personnel planning and business risk mitigation.
  • Willingness to spend time working in a live operational environment and learning about the roles and priorities of different UPS departments via hands-on experience.

Location: UPS Canada HQ, 1930 Derry Road East, Mississauga, Ontario. This job will be based primarily in UPS facilities and at external meetings and engagements in the GTA as required. Modest travel requirements to Ottawa and other locations in Canada (monthly).
