Job Description
Valard is Canada’s premier utility contractor, as well as head of the Valard Group of Companies AND part of the Quanta Group, the largest electrical power contractor in North America. Valard is a full-service EPC+ utility contractor with over four decades of experience, successfully completing projects across Canada.


The Supervisor, Training and Employee Development, is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the training and development programs. This role involves assessing training needs, creating, and delivering training materials, managing technical trainers, coordinating training activities, and evaluating the effectiveness of training initiatives. They play a crucial role in ensuring the company's workforce has the necessary skills and knowledge to execute their work safely and efficiently.


The Supervisor is also responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and management of the apprenticeship program. This role involves onboarding apprentices, coordinating their training and mentorship, monitoring their progress, and ensuring compliance with apprenticeship standards and regulations. They play a pivotal role in nurturing and developing a skilled workforce while adhering to industry guidelines and best practices.


Requirements


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Identify gaps and areas of risk as they are understood, making recommendations for improvement.
  • Define competency levels and proficiency criteria to establish clear expectations and career progression paths.
  • Regularly assess apprentices' progress and performance, providing constructive feedback and identifying areas for improvement
  • Ensure compliance with relevant apprenticeship regulations, standards, and reporting requirements, making recommendations for program enhancements and improvements.
  • Design comprehensive training programs that align with company objectives and industry best practices.
  • Analyze training metrics and performance data to identify areas for improvement and make recommendations for program enhancements.

  • Supervision and Leadership
  • Training delivery
  • Oversee the scheduling and coordinating of training sessions, ensuring availability of trainers, facilities, and necessary equipment.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and regulations to ensure training materials and programs remain current.
  • Competency development and Managment
  • Design and develop competency frameworks that outline the required skills and behaviors for different roles within the organization.
  • Collaborate with management and subject matter experts to identify training needs and goals.
  • Adapt training methods to accommodate different learning styles and maximize participant comprehension and retention.
  • Training Program Development and Evaluation
  • Training Coordination and Administration
  • Ensure execution of accurate training records maintenance, including attendance, evaluations, and certifications.
  • Create training materials, including presentations, manuals, videos, and online resources.
  • Provides direction and mentorship to Apprentice Coordinators, who are responsible for coordination and records management for Valard’s apprentices.
  • Understand HR systems and data available to provide insightful recommendations to the business.
  • Conduct training sessions for employees at various levels, including operational leaders, supervisors, and managers.
  • Ensure the execution of the maintenance of accurate records of apprentices' training hours, skill development, and performance evaluations.
  • Assist Coordinators to liaise and communicate with union representatives to schedule technical training and track apprentice progress and performance.
  • Communicate frequently with supervisors to provide status updates.
  • Approximately 25% travel within Canada and the United States, including visits to various office locations and construction worksites.
  • Communicate with union to ensure Valard is compliant to their regulations.
  • Utilize various instructional techniques, such as presentations, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises, to deliver engaging and effective training.
  • Conduct periodic evaluations and assessments to ensure apprentices meet program requirements and milestones.
  • Provide guidance on addressing performance issues and improving overall team.
  • Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assess the effectiveness of training programs through evaluations, feedback, and post-training assessments.
  • Provides direction and mentorship to Training Coordinator, who is responsible for coordination and records management.
  • Collaborate with department heads and subject matter experts to ensure accuracy and relevance of competency frameworks.
  • Oversee the administration of the learning management system (LMS).
  • Provides direction and mentorship to technical trainers, who are responsible for conducting technical training to various field level employees.
  • Ensure the execution of the maintenance of accurate records of employees’ competence assessments.
  • Apprenticeship Program Management

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (i.e., Education, Human Resources, Business) or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education is preferred.
  • Experience in managing Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Above-average analytical and problem-solving skills.
