Job Description
Work at CBC/Radio-Canada
At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.
Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.
Your role
The Social Media Editor (SME) for CBC News plays a key public-facing role by interacting with the audience through some of Canada’s largest news social media feeds and our robust commenting platform on CBCNews.ca. The SME knows when to engage in conversation by speaking with a smart, authentic and authoritative journalistic voice — and when not to. The role requires a deep understanding of social media platforms and how news is distributed on those platforms.
Curiosity drives you, and you'll use your sharp researching and writing skills to address audience questions in our Ask CBC News inbox. You also spot the trends, tips and must-cover stories among thousands of audience emails and posts.
You’re an experienced journalist, with a strong background in news. Work is governed by and adheres to CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. Advice and guidance are available but initiative and independent judgment are expected.
You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
This is a permanent, full-time role that requires working evenings and weekends, with a Wednesday-Sunday schedule. It can be based in Toronto or Vancouver.
Key Tasks
  • Surface, flag relevant news tips, trends to the editorial team.
  • Train others on various social platforms.
  • Engage with audiences via Zendesk, CBCNews.ca and social media. Includes proactively fostering a high-level two-way exchange with the audience, and responding to audience inquiries when appropriate.
  • Navigate challenging comments and conversations, and implement appropriate escalation protocols.
  • Help verify news stories through social posts.
  • Spot emerging stories and flags to appropriate units (news, business, arts, tech, health, regions).
  • Identify and create content to optimize and distribute on specific CBC News social platforms to target specific audiences, as required.
  • Contribute to social media planning for news specials, features and future events.
  • Run live streams that require interaction with the CBC News audience. Guide reporters and hosts on best practices, and help organize live locations, camera operators and production elements.
  • Contribute to updating best practices.
  • Research, craft answers to audience questions using existing CBC resources, as well as additional sources and interviews.
  • Analyze, categorize large volumes of messages.

  • Strong knowledge of news on social platforms, including emerging social platforms.
  • Minimum three years of relevant newsroom experience that includes proven knowledge of digital news media, social media distribution.
  • Ability to take direction and work with deadlines.
  • Solid understanding of social analytics and ability to direct social media efforts in response to metrics, audience targeting.
