Active Earth Engineering Ltd. is a multidisciplinary engineering and consulting firm specializing in environmental site assessment and remediation, hydrogeological engineering, environmental permitting, and project management. Our clients include government agencies (municipal, provincial, and federal), property owners, contractors, developers, realtors, architects, and other engineers and consultants. Our company was created in 2007 by a small group of like-minded engineers and geoscientists who sought to build a top-tier service consulting firm tailored to our clients’ needs.
We genuinely enjoy working together, we love what we do, and we are fortunate to have experienced very little staff turnover since inception. Our team currently includes more than 45 talented and passionate individuals, including hydrogeologists, engineers, project scientists, technicians and professional support staff. Our offices are located in Victoria, Burnaby, Abbotsford, and Summerland and we look forward to further growth over the coming months and years.
CURRENT OPPORTUNITY
We are regularly requested to provide biology, habitat, and fisheries-related consulting services to our existing clients.We currently sub-contract much of this work to senior biologists at other firms, with qualified Active Earth technicians and scientists providing field monitoring and reporting support as required. We are now developing the capacity to provide all these services in-house.
We are seeking a talented and capable Senior Biologist.
Responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:
- Marine mammal observations.
- Mentoring and growing a team of qualified staff to enable the division to succeed.
- Preparing workplans, proposals, cost estimates, and responses to Requests for Proposals (RFPs) or Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) with support from our existing team.
- Leading and growing our new biosciences division, with the support of a team of other senior environmental professionals.
- Developing client relationships.
- Preparing and reviewing technical reports.
- Riparian Areas Protection Regulation (RAPR) assessments and watercourse classifications.
- Directing, overseeing, coordinating, managing, and executing various biology, habitat, and fisheries-related projects as required.Service areas are anticipated to include but not be limited to:
- Fish salvage and bird nesting surveys.
- Application for notification, authorizations and/or permits under Provincial and Federal legislation, including the BC Water Sustainability Act, BC RAPR, Federal Fisheries Act, and Federal Species at Risk Act.
- Habitat assessments and habitat compensation planning.
- Environmental Monitoring and Construction Environmental Management Planning.
The biosciences team will have access to all existing Active Earth resources, including junior scientists and Biologists in Training (BIT), CAD/GIS resources, project management resources, administrative resources, etc. Our current team includes junior and intermediate staff with certifications in electrofishing, marine mammal observation, and RAPR assessments.
The ideal candidate will:
- Communicating clearly in English, both orally and in writing.
- Working in a leadership role.
- Possess a demonstrated ability, aptitude and interest in:
- Have a strong understanding and interest in the business aspects of the consulting industry.
- Directing subcontractors in a sound, safe, and respectful manner.
- Possess significant expertise in Aquatic Biology, including assessment, permitting and compliance.
- Planning and undertaking various biology, habitat, and/or fisheries projects.
- Have the desire and ability to lead a new service group within an established consulting firm.
- Hiring and mentoring staff and contributing positively to the company culture.
- Managing multiple tasks simultaneous and effectively.
- Working both collaboratively and independently, as warranted.
- Have a minimum of 10 years of consulting and/or industry experience providing biology services in BC.
- Be registered as an R.P.Bio. in BC.
- Managing consulting projects successfully and effectively (on-time and on-budget).
PAY, BENEFITS, & HOURS
Estimated Annual Salary: $100,000 to $145,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
Paid Vacation: Up to four weeks
