Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with excellent technical and interpersonal skills to join our talented marine team and deliver outstanding service to our clients. The successful candidate will be an experienced marine biologist with a desire to take a leadership role in designing and executing field studies, analyzing data, overseeing reporting and regulatory approval processes, and mentoring junior and intermediate staff.

Ausenco is a global company redefining what’s possible across 26 offices in 14 countries. This role is based in Canada, preferably on the west coast out of our Vancouver or Victoria offices but exceptional candidates based in other coastal cities across Canada will be considered (including northern BC, Arctic, and Atlantic Canada).

About You And The Role

You have strong marine technical skills and experience working collaboratively on interdisciplinary teams, mentoring staff, navigating regulatory processes, and producing documents. You’re committed to delivering high-quality work to Ausenco’s existing clients as well as pursuing new opportunities. You’re looking for a chance to grow your career with a company that shares your values and is strongly entrepreneurial.

Your Responsibilities

In your role, you will have the opportunity to take on a wide variety of tasks. Some examples are:

  • Liaising with clients, regulatory agencies, and Indigenous peoples, including (but not limited to) preparing technical content for presentations, delivering technical information during meetings/presentations, responding to questions, and advising clients on path forward.
  • Providing mentoring/leadership for junior and intermediate staff, including constructive feedback.
  • Leading or coordinating components of environmental assessments, information requests, etc. as they relate to the marine environment.
  • Being a champion for safety and quality, every day.
  • Providing technical and regulatory expertise (provincial, territorial, and federal) for projects that interact with marine environments.
  • Marketing Ausenco’s full range of services to existing and potential clients through your work and participation in workshops, conferences, and other business development opportunities.
  • Developing scopes of work and budgets for workplans and proposals related to marine components (e.g., baseline conditions fieldwork, aquatic effects assessments, and associated permitting).
  • Leading components of regulatory submissions related to the marine environment, including delegation of inputs, coordination of work streams, and authoring and/or overseeing the drafting of technical content.
  • Designing and leading marine studies and preparing technical reports.

You Are Solutions-oriented And Have The Following Skills

  • Available to travel as required and sometimes on short notice for projects and other engagements (anticipated travel <10% of time).
  • A professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio or P.Biol.) or eligibility for a designation.
  • 5 to 10 years of progressive experience in marine biology.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
  • Experience working with federal regulators on permits and authorizations.
  • Experience leading and conducting marine biology and/or ocean science programs.
  • A university degree in biology or a related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate complex ideas to audiences with varying levels of scientific literacy, including clients, regulators, community members and other interested stakeholders.
  • Ability to think independently and strategically, maintain a positive attitude, be self-motivated and employ a strong work initiative.
Bonus Points
The Following Attributes May Give You a Competitive Edge
  • A master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • SCUBA experience or commercial dive certification.
  • Experience collaborating with Indigenous peoples.
  • Proficiency in R and/or other advanced statistical packages.
  • Experience with offsetting and habitat compensation in the marine environment.
Working for Ausenco means you won’t settle for the status quo – you’ll be part of a forward-thinking, culturally diverse organisation. We expect our people to deliver outstanding results and will give you the licence to find a better way forward for your clients and stakeholders.
In addition to a competitive remuneration package, we provide employees with a wide range of growth opportunities and training programs to build your skills and pursue your career path.
