Job Summary
Responsible for assisting in the instruction of the Recreation Division Martial Arts Programs which are learn to based programs and conducting a high energy program that meets the program outlines and HIGH FIVE® principles. Instructors will be responsible for teaching, show aptitude for understanding the different approaches required to teach different age groups (i.e. preschool vs. adult participants) and will work with volunteers.
Please note: This posting will be used to fill various vacancies over the coming months and therefore interviews will be offered when required. The recruitment of these positions is dependent on available vacancies and business needs.

Duties and Responsibilities
Duties And Responsibilities - Martial Arts Instructor Lead
Under the direction of the Program Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible to assist in the delivery and operations of a comprehensive learn to based recreational martial arts program, as developed by Recreation Division to meet the needs of all participants and to ensure adequate safety while facilitating leisure activities
  • Being able to incorporate and model the HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development in program delivery where appropriate.
  • Accurate completion of administrative duties (i.e. daily attendance; facility checks, equipment inventory).
  • Effectively provide quality customer service and act as a knowledgeable resource to participants, parents, volunteers and co-workers.
  • Conduct safety checks of program equipment and facility space.
  • Perform emergency procedures as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Provide participants with instruction and supervision while effectively ensuring the safety of all participants.
  • Adhere to all program policies and standards as they relate to program content and delivery.
  • Black belt in Karate or Tae Kwon Do
  • Support the objectives and philosophies of the specific martial arts program through quality instruction and excellent public and staff relations.
  • Complete all mandatory online e-Learning modules.
  • Plan, conduct and evaluate the program.
  • Effectively and in a timely manner communicate any issues/ information that could impact the quality and safe delivery of the program to the manager on duty or your direct supervisor.
Duties And Responsibilities – Martial Arts Instructor Assistant
Under the direction of the Program Supervisor or designate, the successful candidate will be responsible to assist in the delivery and operations of a comprehensive learn to based recreational martial arts program, as developed by Recreation Division to meet the needs of all participants and to ensure adequate safety while facilitating leisure activities.
  • Responds to customer needs and questions with accurate information and/or guidance to resources being responsible and acting within scope of knowledge and service.
  • Complete accident/incident forms as required, participant attendance, assist with grading prep and tournaments as required
  • Conduct safety inspections for room and equipment. Assist with set up and tear down of equipment if required. Ensure equipment is properly stored at the end of each class
  • Support objectives and goals of all recreational Martial Arts Programs through quality instruction, supervision and excellent customer service
  • Present and instruct the group exercise format specific to the outline and objectives
  • Keep head instructor and program supervisors informed of any safety concerns an customer feedback (verbal or written)
  • Prepare skills and drills for belt levels assigned and assist with conducting grading’s and tournaments
  • Being able to incorporate and model the HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development in program delivery where appropriate.
  • Perform emergency procedures as required
Skills And Qualifications
  • At least 16 years of age for Martial Arts Instructor Lead
  • Employment offer is conditional upon receipt of a Level III - Vulnerable Sector Check from a Police unit that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga.
  • HIGH FIVE ® Principles of Healthy Child Development certification.
  • At least 15 years of age for Martial Arts Instructor Assisstant
  • Candidate will have the ability to perform and teach to different levels of participants and demonstrate strong leadership and organizations skills.
  • Registered with a recognized martial arts organization and possess a valid Emergency First Aid & CPR B certification (or higher) from a WSIB approved provider.
In addition to the above requirements, Martial Arts Instructor Assistant will also have:
  • Minimum of one year direct assist teaching experience, strong communication and organizational skills
  • Brown belt in Karate or Tae Kwon Do
In addition to the above requirements, Martial Arts Instructor Lead will also have:
  • Black Belt in Karate or Tae Kwon Do
  • Minimum of one year direct assist teaching experience, strong communication and organizational skills
Hourly Rate/Salary: Martial Arts Instructor Assistant PD (19.69 - 24.06) Martial Arts Instructor Lead PG (24.42 - 32.55)
