Job Description

Duration: 3 Months to start, full time, permanent after.

What We Are Looking For

We are on the hunt for an Intermediate Graphic Designer to expand our passionate and highly creative internal design team. This position calls for a highly collaborative designer with a creative spark and a keen understanding of marketing communications and brand building in the cannabis space. You must possess the ability to adapt for an industry in constant flux, have some sharp concept ideation abilities, strong communication skills, and the passion and self-motivation to be the best in the business. You thrive with innovative problem-solving — from concept development to production design to high-caliber executions. Your style is diverse and can span across communication touchpoints, from in-store to online, digital, and print. We need someone that knows the rules yet isn’t afraid to push them to their breaking point.

Why You’ll Love This Job

The creative challenges are as diverse in medium as they are in demographics, so there is never a dull moment. From the in-store customer journey to digital online touchpoints (and everything in between), this is about as creative as you can get. If we can dream it up, we make it happen — our only limitation on what is possible is ourselves (and sometimes Health Canada). Motif offers the ideal environment for creative brains to thrive, as design and innovation are an integral part of the entire process.

About Motif

Motif Labs — a licensed cannabis extraction facility in Aylmer, ON — is a rapidly growing company that is thriving in the Canadian cannabis space. With creativity, passion, and innovation at its core, our internal brands have developed into industry leaders. The best part? The momentum has only just begun as we continue to diversify our consumer-goods portfolio.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Seek out knowledge sharing opportunities with fellow designers to continuously work towards upskilling.
  • Interpret feedback provided by the Art Director, Creative Director, and/or stakeholders and implement revisions to ensure final product is accurate and consistent with all internal brands.
  • Actively participate and engage in internal review meetings and brainstorming sessions
  • Prepare final print and digital design files to be sent to external vendors and internal teams to be executed and distributed.
  • Interpret direction derived from both formal and informal creative briefs and requests from concept to completion to ensure all project requirements are met, identifying and communicating any gaps in requirements that prevent them from moving forward in a timely manner.
  • Execute high-quality creative design in both traditional and digital mediums, while ensuring brand standards are met and maintained, for integrated marketing programs and campaigns, which may include retail, in-store, video content, storyboards, traditional media, ecommerce, websites/microsites, tradeshow, animation/motion graphics, and social media.
  • Continuously seek out learning opportunities to expand understanding of cannabis retail landscape in Canada and knowledge of cannabis retail customer journeys.
  • Design compliant packaging for cannabis products and accessories in adherence to strict Health Canada guidelines in collaboration with our internal Regulations team.

Requirements

  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat) and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge and understanding of brand development and print and digital production
  • Well-rounded portfolio showcasing strong, innovative creative ideas and an excellent understanding of different communication spaces, mediums, and approaches.
  • Diploma/degree in Graphic Design, or equivalent
  • 2-5 years of design experience in a similar role, preferably in a corporate or agency environment
  • Innovator: You don’t believe in the status quo and you like to make things happen.
  • Time management: You can manage your time, hit deadlines, and be on time for meetings, all while juggling multiple projects.
  • A strategic thinker that works well independently and as part of a core team.
  • Communicator: You can communicate well and get your ideas across. You have strong professional interpersonal communication skills, in-person and via email and Teams.
  • Detail-oriented: You work pixel-perfect, are highly detail-oriented, and have an excellent feel for typography and layout.
  • Team player: You are positive, collaborative and a contagious spirit who works well with others and is eager to learn.

Additional Assets

  • Retail packaging experience, especially in the cannabis industry
  • Basic understanding of design accessibility practices
  • Experience in cannabis, alcohol, or related industries
  • Experience in Adobe After Effects
