What You’ll Be Doing


CIBC Innovation Banking has proven to be a helpful partner to the innovation ecosystem. The team has demonstrated an ability to support technology and innovation companies with strategic advice and flexible financing solutions that meet the needs of their clients as they start to build and grow their ventures.


The Director, Portfolio Management’s primary responsibilities will be the ongoing management, monitoring and administration of the Innovation Banking loan portfolio. The position will work with Relationship Managers, Originations, Credit Solutions and Credit Processing Services (CPS) to collect and analyze information on the credit quality of existing clients and the overall loan portfolio, monitor compliance with agreed terms and provide regular and ad-hoc portfolio reporting to Innovation Banking senior management. You will assist the team’s senior members in the administration and management of High Risk Innovation Banking accounts, with the objective of restoring deteriorating loans to health, maximizing recovery of non-performing loans, and preserving the Bank's capital. As you build your understanding of the management of distressed Innovation Banking credits, you will also have the opportunity to assume direct responsibility for the oversight and handling of certain accounts.

How You’ll Succeed


  • Results Focused – Instruct counsel on the preparation of documentation, including financing and forbearance agreements. Monitor progress within work-out plans, keep Credit Risk Management apprised of developments and any changing circumstances, work to establish consensus on preferred action plan and procure its approval, and take steps as appropriate to implement. Liaise with back office regarding account transactional matters including recording and release of security, changes in risk ratings and programmed limits, account enquiries, and the like.
  • Analytical – Monitor portfolio of Innovation Banking clients, discussing matters with relevant Relationship Managers and Credit Solutions team members as appropriate. Support the senior Portfolio Management colleagues in the negotiation, documentation, and implementation of work-out and restructuring arrangements for assigned accounts. Analyze and interpret client business plans and /or proposed restructuring plans.
  • Detail Oriented – Assist with preparation and review of portfolio-wide data and monitor metrics. Identify anomalies and concerning trends and investigate these with the appropriate teams for resolution or escalation as necessary.


Who You Are


  • You give meaning to financial data. You enjoy investigating complex problems and making sense of information. You have a good understanding of corporate finance and ability to evaluate and understand complex capital structures.

  • You demonstrate experience in commercial lending or adjudication and strong knowledge of credit practices and variables that impact upon credit risk. This experience may have been gained through a minimum of 5 years working in technology lending, venture capital, and/or commercial or corporate banking. As result, you possess mature business judgment are proactive, well organized and results-oriented. Familiarity with insolvency practices used in Canada and the USA would be beneficial.
  • Education You've Completed. You have a Bachelors or equivalent degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Technology or related field. Advanced business degree or professional designation (MBA/CFA/CA/CGA/CMA) or equivalent work experience would be an asset.
