Job Description
Job Summary:


Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Finance will be a change leader charged with identifying opportunities for greater efficiency across our group of companies. They will oversee our administrative, IT systems, and finance operations and must have experience in promoting change by engaging teams and fostering collaboration. They must also have strong management skills with an eagerness to develop and mentor their direct reports.

Van-Kam Freightways Ltd. (Van Kam) is one of the largest regional carriers in Western Canada specializing in less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation. With 8 terminal locations across British Columbia, we fulfill shipments to communities within 1-3 days throughout BC and Alberta. Between our own resources and our partner network, our coverage extends beyond Western Canada into the U.S. and Eastern Canada.


Responsibilities:


  • Develop operational, administrative, and capital budgets, which will include operational capital planning.
  • Lead change by encouraging cross-departmental collaboration and uniting teams around Van Kam’s vision of building a respectful and collaborative culture.
  • Oversee and support finance operations and collaborate with Controller to execute long-term strategic plans aimed at cutting costs, streamlining operations, and forecasting for future projects.
  • Empower employees to contribute to decision-making and streamline business processes for greater efficiency.
  • Work closely with our executive team and CEO to strategically plan and achieve organizational goals.
  • Monitor and ensure the responsible allocation of resources while also identifying new opportunities for growth and innovation.


Information Technology


  • Oversee our IT systems and processes by collaborating with department heads to streamline tech operations and prioritize projects.
  • Evaluate current processes and technologies and implement standardized systems and processes.
  • Continually seek new ways to enhance our systems with advance and future technologies.


Required Qualifications:


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities


  • Proven leadership skills related to vision setting, decision making, and problem solving. The ability to lead by example, inspire others, and demonstrate integrity and honesty in all aspects of the role.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills. Must understand the needs, motivations and interests of others and be able to adapt and tailor messaging as appropriate.
  • Must possess high emotional intelligence and the ability to build rapport and trust among colleagues and employees.
  • Strong foundation in finance is essential, including knowledge of financial planning, analysis, reporting, and risk management. In-depth understanding of accounting principles, financial regulations, and tax law.
  • Proficiency in financial software, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, data analysis tools, and spreadsheet software is essential. Keeping up with advancements in technology and data analytics is advantageous.
  • A strategic thinker who can easily analyze complex situations, identify opportunities, and make informed decisions that align with the organization’s goals.
  • Talent for building relationships and fostering effective cross-functional team collaboration.


Training And Experience


  • Minimum 8-10 years at an Executive or Senior level Finance position.


Education


  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Chartered Professional Accountant designation or equivalent.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Knowledge of and understanding of the trucking industry.
