West Power Energy strives to provide engineering services to public and private utility companies, consultants, and contractors taking part in the design and construction of power generation facilities, transmission lines, and substations, across the United States and Canada. We offer solutions from feasibility studies, full engineering design services to close out and preparation of as-built recordings.
West Power Energy is looking for a Transmission Line Team Lead to join our team in our Calgary-AB office. The Team Lead will be responsible for leading a team of engineers and designers to support the client’s projects. The successful candidate will be involved in all facets of transmission line routing and design and be the technical lead on transmission line projects. The primary duties include:
Technical Execution & Project Oversight
- Provide weekly or bi-weekly project updates and project forecasting.
- Coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
- Act as Engineer of Record in preparing construction documents including plan and profile drawings, structure loading trees, and foundation and assembly drawings
- Develop project design alternatives and corresponding cost estimates.
- Act as Engineer of Record in preparing specifications and project design criteria. Provide construction support for high voltage transmission line project.
- Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations, drawing preparation, and transmission line models based in PLS-CADD.
- Design of transmission lines ranging from 69kV to 500kV.
- Lead and/or support PM by meeting with clients.
- Looking for a seller-doer with the ability to develop client relationships.
- Develop design criteria and specifications for the transmission line design and procurement of materials.
- Familiar with industry codes and standards and have experience as the technical lead on projects.
Leadership & Staff Development
- Participate in new hire screening and review processes.
- Plan and provide training to transmission line engineers on different aspects of the overhead line design.
- Develop, mentor, and direct small teams about project tasks and technical requirements.
- Work closely with the Leadership Team to engage in strategic planning.
- Provide technical leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members.
- Supporting the leadership team and managing and expanding the operation in Canada.
- Establish clearly defined goals and standards for employee performance.
- Work closely with project managers and the director of engineering to support resourcing/staffing of the projects.
- Plan regular one-on-one coaching and support sessions with the team including career mapping discussions.
Qualifications
- Minimum 8 years in transmission line design and field transmission construction experience (completion of a master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of experience)
- Fluent English knowledge of all three competencies of Speaking, Reading, and writing
- Ability to motivate, counsel, coach, and develop direct reports and others
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, clients, and external agencies
- PLS-CADD expertise preferred, including PLS-Pole and/or PLS-Tower
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Professional Engineer License in the US or working towards obtaining preferred
- Experience managing projects and leading multi-disciplined teams
- Must be analytical, self-motivated, and possess the ability to work in a team environment and in a variety of situations while maintaining a positive, enthusiastic attitude
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or electrical engineering from an accredited program
