Overview


The Research & Development Engineer works in a fast-paced lab environment as part of a team designing, developing and testing concepts and technologies for new product introduction.


Reporting to the R&D Manager, this position is responsible for performing engineering activities and leading projects in the design, development and validation of new industrial technologies, components and products with specific focus on material selection and performance enhancement. This position requires expertise in material science, including knowledge of ceramics, metals, alloys, and related manufacturing processes.


This position requires infrequent travel to other company facilities or client sites (less than 5% travel).


Primary Duties


Engineering/Technical Responsibilities


  • Providing technical support to clients
  • Stay up-to-date with technology advancement and industry trends.
  • Design and execute experiments to develop and validate new materials or improve existing ones, considering factors such as composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, and processing techniques.
  • Design and build prototype samples for testing and evaluation
  • Review technical specifications; prepare, review and approval of engineering drawings, bills of materials, and other engineering documentations
  • Review updated codes and standards and assess impact on existing product design
  • Maintain computer data files and document records for all lab testing
  • Transform conceptual ideas into prototypes. Research, test, and assist in the design of new products. Follow projects from infancy to market introduction as needed.
  • Provide technical support to Sales, Production, Purchasing, and Quality departments.
  • Prepare technical documents (i.e. test procedures, lab reports, root cause analysis)
  • Perform troubleshooting, resolution analysis on a variety of heating products and associated equipment
  • Provide enhancement and continuous improvement to existing products and processes
  • Develop test plans to understand technical concepts and validate new designs
  • Conduct research to understand the properties, behavior, and performance of refractory and metallurgical materials.


Safety


  • Ensure a safe workplace, including compliance with established safety laws, regulations, codes, policies, and procedures.


Must Have Qualifications


  • Experience in designing and executing test plans, analyzing data and generating technical reports.
  • Excellent knowledge of safe working practices
  • Post-secondary Mechanical/Materials engineering degree with min. 4 years of relevant industrial experience
  • Proven experience in material science research and development.
  • Strong communication skills and able to work independently or as part of a team
  • Adept in Microsoft Applications
  • Familiarity and experience with certification standards - CSA, UL, IEC
  • Fundamental working knowledge of heating equipment and control concepts
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to apply scientific principles to address complex challenges


Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of hazardous location operating environments and product requirements
  • Ability to troubleshoot and work to resolve issues under tight deadlines
  • Experience with electric and gas heating equipment
  • Strong background in ceramics and metallurgical material science
  • Mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of electrical power concepts
  • Professional Engineering certification is an asset
