Senior Researcher

Narratives is currently seeking candidates for the position of a Senior Researcher. The position will be based in Winnipeg, Manitoba from June 1, 2023, to June 1, 2025, with the possibility of an extension.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of memoranda, briefing notes, background studies, research reports, and other research deliverables.
  • Report to clients and community members on topics and themes to provide updates on ongoing research.
  • Lead in the procurement of records, archives, and resources from a range of government, archival, and private institutions to support research initiatives.
  • Inform, develop, and conduct qualitative research, including data collection, coding, thematic analyses, and reporting.
  • Conduct literature reviews and archival searches using a variety of sources on topics including but not limited to Indigenous law and Indigenous rights, aboriginal law, impact benefit agreements and negotiations, impact assessment, trauma and trauma-informed practice, community planning and design, history, and policy.
  • Supporting with delivering various capacity-building and training programs.
  • Assist with designing engagement plans, conducting interviews, focus groups, workshops, storytelling circles, etc. to understand potential impacts of proposed projects.
  • Conduct interviews for the purposes of analysis, which may include qualitative data analysis.
  • Provide mentorship and leadership in the field and practice of research, literature / archive procurement, and reporting for a small team of researchers.


Qualifications

  • Graduate or post-graduate degree in a program of the social sciences, humanities, arts, or sciences. Applicants with commensurate skill or experience with research, research management, writing and reporting, will also be considered.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience. Experience working with Indigenous communities is a must.
  • Hold a valid drivers’ license.
  • Thorough understanding of approaches to decolonizing research and trauma-informed approaches.


Skills

  • Exceptional writing, analytical, and communication skills
  • Experience working with Qualitative Data Analysis software
  • Ability to communicate with diverse audiences.
  • Experience working as part of a research team
  • Experience delegating research tasks and mentoring junior researchers
  • Ability to travel (sometimes 3 days a week, few weeks in a row).
  • Adaptable, versatile, able to work in a past-paced environment, willing to learn and explore.
  • Strong attention to detail, and ability to manage and organize large amounts of information.
