The Opportunity
The Research Coordinator will provide support to Dr. Megan Thomas and Manager of Inpatient and Ambulatory Medical Care, to deliver the Sleep for Health in Hospital and at Home Translating Research into Care Award. Dr. Megan Thomas is an Associate Professor and Developmental Pediatrician in the Department of Pediatrics, Dalhousie University. Her research focuses on promoting healthy sleep for children and youth, and their families. As a Developmental Pediatrician, Dr. Thomas works to support individuals with a range of neurodevelopmental conditions to access appropriate services and live healthy, happy and fulfilling lives. This research will require continually working with patients, families, and staff of the IWK and primarily take place within Inpatient and Ambulatory Medical Care, Children’s Health Program, at the IWK which includes the Pediatric Medical Unit (PMU).
Responsibilities Will Include (but Are Not Limited To)
  • Assist with focus groups with parents and health care providers.
  • Other related administrative duties as needed.
  • Draft research reports/presentations/manuscript and publication materials.
  • Project management of the Shhh2 project.
  • Participant recruitment
  • Obtain informed consent and conduct study procedures according to protocols
  • Study communications, including emails and mail to participants.
  • Preparation of Research Ethics Board (REB) submissions, protocol amendment forms, and grant applications.
  • Maintaining excellent professional relations with families and patients as well as collaborative relationships with clinical staff (physicians, nurses, ward clerks, etc.)
  • Assist with tracking and reporting progress.
  • Execute questionnaires as required for studies.
  • Managing study finances within study budgets (e.g., participant reimbursements)
  • Conduct literature searches including interpretation and summarizing scientific literature.
  • Patient partner engagement.
  • Data management which includes quantitative and qualitative data collection, entry, preparation, and analysis
Assistance With General Lab Management
  • Photocopying, scanning, and delivering documents.
  • Establishing and maintaining office filing systems to ensure efficient storage and retrieval of information and records.
  • Assist with supervising research volunteers and trainees.
  • Facilitating lab communications (e.g., answering emails, phone calls, and mail promptly, updating websites and social media platforms)
  • Coordinating lab meetings and events (e.g., booking rooms, managing equipment, preparing agendas, recording minutes, etc.)
  • Preparing reports and other summary documents (e.g., CVs)
Hours of Work
15-18 hours/week. Some flexibility can be accommodated (e.g., some early mornings, evenings, or weekends may be required)
Your Qualifications
  • Experience with social media for science communication, patient engagement, and knowledge translation an asset.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Master’s degree (research based) or doctorate degree preferred but a relevant Honours degree may be considered
  • Previous experience with qualitative analysis and software programs
  • Experience using university and hospital libraries including experience with reference management software (e.g., EndNote or Mendeley) preferred
  • Experience in writing manuscripts, protocols and reports an asset
  • Professionalism, good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact well with families, children of all ages, and vulnerable populations
  • Experience in a related role in a health centre or university/academic environment, and/or relevant experience working with children and families
  • Attention to detail with a high regard for quality and a demonstrated ability to establish and meet timelines and deadlines
  • High degree of computer literacy and internet resourcefulness (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, etc.).
  • Competencies in other languages an asset
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and also collaboratively within a team structure
