The Opportunity


The Research Coordinator will provide support to Dr. Megan Thomas and members of the proposed Sleep for Health Research Centre, Drs. Sarah Shea, Penny Corkum and Teresa Pinto, to develop the application for the Research Centre’s approval. The purpose of the Sleep for Health Research Centre is to bring together researchers, clinicians, IWK staff, patients/families, faculty from across Dalhousie University, trainees and others to foster productive relationships, facilitate successful project development, competitive funding applications and ethical, unbiased research studies to improve sleep health for all. This project will require interactions with a wide range of stakeholders, within and outside of the IWK, including children, young people and families.


Responsibilities Will Include (but Are Not Limited To)


  • Coordinating meetings and events (e.g., booking rooms, managing equipment, preparing agendas, recording minutes, etc.)
  • Conduct literature searches including interpretation and summarizing scientific literature.
  • Facilitating communications (e.g., answering emails, phone calls, and mail promptly, updating websites and social media platforms)
  • Collating information on sleep research projects in different departments and faculties within Dalhousie University, other universities within Nova Scotia and throughout the Maritimes.
  • Patient partner engagement.
  • Assist with supervising research volunteers and trainees.
  • Help write the Research Centre Application.
  • Data base management which includes data collection, entry, preparation, and analysis.
  • Draft reports/presentations/manuscript and publication materials.
  • Photocopying, scanning, and delivering documents.
  • Assistance with general management:
  • Preparing reports and other summary documents (e.g., CVs)
  • Other related administrative duties as needed.
  • Identifying professionals with clinical, educational and/or research sleep interests and expertise within the Maritimes.
  • Explore HSNS database access and other sources of data
  • Support priority setting exercises on research priorities for the IWK regarding sleep.
  • Fostering connections and relationships with a broad range of stakeholders
  • Establishing and maintaining office filing systems to ensure efficient storage and retrieval of information and records.
  • Assist with tracking and reporting progress.
  • Managing study finances within study budgets
  • Develop a Sleep for Health website


Hours of Work


16-20 hours/week. Some flexibility can be accommodated (e.g., some early mornings, evenings, or weekends may be required) Note: Currently many research staff and trainees are working remotely due to COVID-19 protocols and thus, the position is likely to include remote working as well as being on site at the IWK Health Centre.


Your Qualifications


  • Experience with social media for science communication, patient engagement, and knowledge translation an asset.
  • Previous experience of website design an asset
  • Experience using university and hospital libraries including experience with reference management software (e.g., EndNote or Mendeley) preferred
  • Experience of sleep research or sleep medicine preferred
  • Professionalism, good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact well with families, children of all ages, and vulnerable populations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Master’s degree (research based) or doctorate degree preferred but a relevant Honours degree may be considered
  • Attention to detail with a high regard for quality and a demonstrated ability to establish and meet timelines and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and also collaboratively within a team structure
  • High degree of computer literacy and internet resourcefulness (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, etc.).
  • Experience in a related role in a health centre or university/academic environment, and/or relevant experience working with children and families
  • Experience in writing manuscripts, protocols and reports an asset
  • Competencies in other languages an asset
