Job Summary

The RHSRNbc was established in May 2010, as part of an overall strategy to improve and expand health services research within British Columbia. Over the past 10 years, RHSRNbc has evolved to become an enabling structure to help researchers pursue research that aligns with their interests. Initiatives include coordinating funding opportunities, online resources, and fostering partnerships among health authorities, students, various health professionals, and universities to better support rural health services research. The goals of the Network are ultimately to enhance communication, collaboration, and capacity in rural health services. The Network is funded by the Rural Coordination Centre of BC (RCCbc) and is located within the Department of Family Practice.

The Research Network Coordinator will work with the Director, the RHSRNbc team, and other stakeholders to coordinate all activities related to projects at RHSRNbc. Activities will include supporting clients with the coordination of specific research projects, support health authorities research conferences, overseeing proposals and handling contracts for new research projects, representing the Network at events (e.g., presentations), as well as financial and administrative duties.

The Research Network Coordinator must make professional decisions and recommendations on all aspects of research work and will be responsible for the quality of administrative and research activities.

Organizational Status

The Research Network Coordinator will report directly to the Director, Dr. Stefan Grzybowski.

RHSRNbc Research Assistants or Work Learn students will report to the Research Network Coordinator. The Research Network Coordinator will also communicate with the larger research teams as needed.

Work Performed

The Research Network Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Working collaboratively with others to meet the objectives of the research project by:
  • Representing the RHSRNbc at provincial and national events (e.g., conferences, workshops)

  • Communicating with the Director on daily workings of the Network (liaising between network members and Director)
  • Managing the RHSRNbc budget and finances, in addition to general bookkeeping duties
  • Communication with Office of Research Services to set up research accounts for new research projects
  • Performing other duties as required
  • Liaising with network membership to facilitate requests for network support
  • Leading research team meetings
  • Managing the staffing requirements for hiring of research assistants, work-learn students, other support staff (writing job descriptions, screening applicants, participating in candidate selection, and conducting work performance evaluation, termination and discipline)
  • Overseeing financial transactions and working with the Department to ensure procedures are correctly followed
  • Planning, implementing and supporting all RHSRNbc projects and initiatives including events, workshops and activities. This includes but is not limited to:
  • Managing budgets (including tracking, forecasting)

  • Ensuring that project files and accounts are set up and maintained
  • Ensuring adequate supplies are available
  • Creating new opportunities for the Network such as programs and potential partnerships in advance research support in rural health services
  • Overseeing general office management with respect to the assigned research project by:
  • Scanning, researching and synthesizing literature and events related to rural health services. This includes academic searches of online databases, and summarizing articles/findings in written reports
  • Supporting researchers at different stages of their research projects: study design and development, ethics approval, finding funding agencies, proofreading documents such as grant applications
  • Working with investigators on various research projects to define research strategy, goals and scope of project
  • Review and select Team Building Award and Symposia Grant recipients and following project progress and deliverables
  • Communicating with funder on RHSRNbc progress and deliverables
  • Selecting FLEX students to fund and following along their research projects' progress
  • Liaising with a variety of stakeholders at workshops, conferences and meetings (this includes physicians, academics and policy makers)
  • Supporting grant applications, which includes referencing support, formatting and editing
  • Coordinate and facilitate events such as workshops, conferences, and symposiums

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The work of the Research Network Coordinator will be monitored by the Director. Errors or incorrect decisions could compromise the quality of the research, compromise the collegial relationships with partners and/or participants, result in delays in completing projects, and potentially impact the credibility of the Department and its investigators. The work of the Research Network Coordinator must be completed at a high level of accuracy and efficiency.
