Job Summary
To provide support to the Teresa Liu-Ambrose’s Aging, Mobility, and Cognitive Neuroscience (AMC) Lab. Under the direct supervision of Teresa Liu-Ambrose, will provide ongoing administrative and research support for research activities related to falls and fracture prevention in the AMC Lab. Specifically, incumbent will coordinate randomized controlled trials and the Falls Prevention Clinic. The AMC Lab functions under the umbrella of the Department of Physical Therapy, the DM Centre for Brain Health, and the Centre for Hip Health & Mobility.
Organizational Status
Reports directly to the program Director (Teresa Liu-Ambrose) and will work in parallel with other research staff in the AMC Lab and the Falls Prevention Clinic
Working Relationship
The position will work directly and report to the Director who is mounting the studies. This will involve working with developed systems and procedures, following direction from the Director of the AMC research program (will not be working independently, will be working as a part of a team, under direction)
Work Performed
  • Assist Director with planning and booking of facilities for research seminars and conferences hosted by the Aging, Mobility, and Cognitive Neuroscience Research Lab.
  • Communicate with health care professionals (e.g., general physicians, physical therapists) to promote referrals to the VGH Falls Prevention Clinic, a major source of recruitment for the AMC Lab
  • Coordinate the day to day activities of the VGH Falls Prevention Clinic
  • Assist the Director in activities relating to lab management, such as tracking inventory, and supplies, organizing files, and CV updating.
  • Co-lead with Director and other AMC research staff to coordinate time lines on deadline driven tasks, as well as the coordination of experiments and implements experiments.
  • Recruit older adults from the VGH Falls Prevention Clinic as well as from the community for studies related to cognitive health and mobility in aging; this may require making home visits
  • Create and manage confidential database research files; will be responsible for accuracy/validity of data entered as well as proper storage of physical and electronic files
  • Collect data according to protocol and enter data with minimal error with direct supervision from the Director using preset forms
  • Monitor all adverse events reported in the different studies, document them, and have them reviewed by each study’s data and safety monitoring committees (if applicable)
  • Interviews on behalf of the Director for student volunteers and other personnel and provides recommendations to Director
  • Assist Director with ethics applications, including new applications, amendments, and annual renewals.
  • Develop and implement recruitment strategies to ensure the feasibility of studies
  • Supervises and trains other Research Technicians I and II working in the VGH Falls Clinic
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, such as maintaining essential office supplies for research projects
  • Liaises and coordinates with research staff, graduate students, and volunteers to complete tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Assist with manuscript publications by providing descriptive tables and basic literature searches
  • Support to the activities of the AMC Laboratory by supervising and training UBC WorkLearns, graduate students, undergraduate trainees, and new staff in assessment and laboratory procedures.
  • Assist with invoice payments and ensuring proper filing to receipts
  • Prepare (cleaning, quality checks, organization) data ready for statistical analyses and publication
  • Submits hourly payroll and WorkLearn hours on behalf of the AMC lab
  • Ensure study protocols are documented, stored on server, and implemented across different studies being conducted from participants drawn from the VGH Falls Prevention Clinic. This includes recruitment according to eligibility criteria, communicate with physical therapists who are providing the intervention to study participants to ensure timely delivery of intervention, adherence to the study protocol/intervention, and any other relevant information to ensure the safety and well-being of participants, collect data according to standard protocol, ensure the accuracy of the CONSORT flowchart, accuracy of data entered, and documentation of any deviations and reporting them back to the Director
  • Liaises with research participants to develop relationships that is positive and informative; assist in recruiting them to be patient partners
  • Assist and develop relationships with study physicians and physicians of the VGH Falls Prevention Clinic involved in various studies
  • Will onboard new members to the Lab and ensure all training and certificates are acquired
  • Timely submission of hours for hourly staff and Work Learn students
  • Assist graduate students in their thesis work, after discussion with Director
  • Assures established lab safety & ensures safety procedures are followed
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Inappropriate judgement would compromise the quality of research studies and related data acquisition and the reporting of research outcomes.
Inappropriate judgement also could compromise the safety and wellbeing of the participants.
Poor financial decisions would affect the ability of the Unit to manage its resources effectively that would result in research projects being delayed or cancelled altogether.
Inappropriate judgement would compromise research success and affect the credibility of the Principal Investigator/Director.
Supervision Received
Works independently in consultation with the Director of the AMC research program
Supervision Given
Responsible for training and supervising measurement staff/students, WorkLearn, volunteers, and research assistants for data collection and data entry purposes.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Working Conditions
Office environment with current computer equipment. Will require regular communications via videoconferencing, email, and in person to organize and execute studies. Will be interacting directly with older adults on a daily basis and work within a team composed of graduate students and research assistants and coordinators. May be required to make home visits on occasion for recruitment or data collection.
Preferred Qualifications
Education & Experience:
University degree in a relevant discipline plus a minimum of three years of related experience in a university health research laboratory that focused on clinical research, with a strong preference for research experience in geriatrics and falls prevention.
Must have had direct working experience (i.e., frequent in-person contacts) with older adults with cognitive or physical impairment. Strong preference will be given to those who have experience in falls prevention, mobility assessments, and neuropsychological testing across a diverse population of older adults.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Good knowledge of age-related changes in physical and cognitive abilities
Good knowledge of conditions such as chronic stroke, mild cognitive impairment, and different types of dementias
Must demonstrate excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Laboratory maintenance and development experience
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent organizational skills including ability to manage multiple tasks
Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
Discretion, tact and confidentiality
Technical proficiency using various word processing software, spreadsheet programs, presentation software, data bases and Internet.
Must demonstrate ability to receive and respond to critical feedback for the sake of improving job performance
