Job Description
The Sunnybrook Research Institute is seeking a Research Coordinator. This individual will be responsible for managing several research studies led by team members in the Evaluative Clinical Sciences Platform at Sunnybrook Research Institute in collaboration with Indigenous community partners and Ontario Health related to cancer screening Indigenous communities in Ontario and cultural safety.


Description


We are searching for an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual who is very organized, has experience in community-based research, exceptional interpersonal skills, and who will enjoy collaborating and conducting research in a stimulating environment. Previous experience in the coordination of research studies and in working collaboratively with First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities is essential; formal training in qualitative, community-based research is highly desirable. The successful applicant will support the design and implementation of research studies conducted in partnership with Indigenous communities and other health system stakeholders. They will work collaboratively with partners to lead data collection, recruiting and enrolling participants, and will assist in Research Ethics Board (REB) submissions, analysis of study findings and writing manuscripts and other Knowledge Translation activities. Applicants must have experience or expertise in Microsoft Office and be proficient with all its component applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).


Summary of key responsibilities (not meant to be all encompassing; to be conducted with research team support):


Research activities


  • Supporting collection, organization, and analysis of research data (e.g., conducting in-depth interviews and talking circles; storing data securely; participating in qualitative data analysis)
  • Working closely with senior research team members to further develop research skills
  • Handling and protecting research data according to relevant protocols and regulations (e.g., PHIPA, OCAP® principles)
  • Supporting development/training of, and overseeing, junior team members (e.g., students, other research staff)
  • Assisting with the design of research tools (e.g., interview guides, consent forms)
  • Participating in literature reviews and environmental scans
  • Supporting development of research publications and other Knowledge Translation activities (e.g., writing and development of research reports and journal publications; research website maintenance; updating resources; supporting resource accreditation; sharing summaries with community partners)


Relationship building


  • Seeking and maintaining approval from research ethics and other community boards
  • Supporting participant recruitment, explaining research activities clearly, obtaining informed consent from potential study participants
  • Supporting Indigenous community research partnership development and maintenance (e.g., supporting team in engaging with and seeking approval from community leadership to conduct research activities in Indigenous communities, working in respectful partnership with communities, and reporting back to participating communities and other partners)
  • Liaising between, and coordinating activities among, research team with community, policy/health system and research institution partners
  • Supporting development and maintenance of research agreements with community and institutional research partners


Administrative and other activities


  • Coordinating logistics and keeping records for the research studies (e.g., scheduling meetings, developing detailed meeting summary notes, booking meeting rooms, organizing events, tracking research activities)
  • Occasional travel throughout Ontario to conduct research related activities, with occasional overnight stays
  • Overall efficient day-to-day management of assigned research studies including maintenance of study documentation
  • Other tasks as needed
  • Work with the research team to ensure that the studies are meeting their targets

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including communicating research findings to community, academic and health system/policy audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to support Knowledge Translation activities (e.g., developing research summaries, reports, and journal publications, sharing research findings with research partners)
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in designing and implementing research studies (e.g., developing research protocols and data collection materials, conducting qualitative interviews, and talking circles, analyzing, and interpreting qualitative data)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage administrative research tasks for complex projects
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organization and time management skills
  • Strong and demonstrated understanding of unique challenges, needs and resilience of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, communities, Nations


Education and work experience


  • Discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Knowledge about cancer and cancer screening is an asset
  • At least 3-5 years of experience successfully working on/conducting health research projects
  • Experience conducting qualitative research (e.g., recruiting participants and collecting and analyzing data, for example from interviews and talking circles)
  • Willingness to receive training
  • Experience in addressing Indigenous chronic disease issues is an asset
  • Experience and comfort using MS Office software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience working with First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, communities, Nations and organizations
  • Experience using qualitative research software (e.g., NVivo) is an asset
  • Completion of a postsecondary degree (master’s degree preferred) in a health-related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
