Current Needs:
LEI is currently seeking Research Associates and Consultants in our office in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Please note that this is primarily an in-office position with a minimum of 3 days a week required in the office.
Position: Research Associate / Consultant:
Qualified applicants should have demonstrated knowledge of economics, finance, and statistics. The applicant should have an interest in the energy industry and infrastructure and project finance related work.
Candidates should have strong writing skills and the ability to convey complex concepts in a clear and concise fashion. Foreign language skills are a plus. All candidates must be comfortable working in a casual, non-hierarchical environment.
LEI’s entry level opportunities provide recent graduates the opportunity to acquire hands-on experience on a variety of subject matters (within the energy sector), and work under the guidance of experienced professionals that will help leverage the foundation of knowledge gained during classwork, internships, and co-ops.
Responsibilities:
- Working within an interdisciplinary team conducting applied research and providing consulting services in support of both domestic and international engagements.
- Carrying out industry focus research tasks to support project team on regulatory economics and policy analyses. Research Associates and Consultants are expected to be involved on topics ranging from design of decarbonization policies, market and institutional design, to tariff methodology etc.).
- Conducting analysis to support the firm’s consulting activities in electricity market transition, deployment of clean-tech technologies, wholesale power market reforms etc.
- Stay current in policies, regulatory requirements, market trends, and technological development to update forecast processes within the company.
- Conducting quantitative analyses (statistical/econometric analysis, cost-benefit analysis, price forecasting etc.) to provide support on commercial transactions, assets valuation, or planning activities.
Required Experience
Qualified applicants should have demonstrated genuine interest in energy markets. Direct experience in the power sector, gas sector, or energy infrastructure development is preferred. Basic prerequisite skill set for LEI professional staff includes understanding of economic principles, strong writing skills, and working knowledge in economics, finance, statistics, or policy design.
Education
- Bachelors or more advanced degree in economics, resource/environmental economics, public policy, international development, sustainability or a related discipline with an outstanding academic record.
- Demonstrated ability to produce high quality quantitative and written analysis.
- Working understanding of a World Bank official language (beyond English) is preferred.
- Candidates should have strong writing skills and the ability to convey complex concepts in a clear and concise fashion. Foreign language skills are a plus. All candidates must be comfortable working in a casual, non-hierarchical environment and must have the ability to travel periodically (must have a valid passport).
- Relevant energy industry experience preferred but not required for the Research Associate position; 1-3 years of energy industry experience is required for the Consultant position.
- Course work should include economics, environmental/resource economics, finance, statistics or econometrics.
