Job Description
The Program Lead of the Simulation, Resuscitation and Outreach Training Center reports directly to the Manager of patient safety, McMaster Children is Hospital and works collaboratively with our frontline teams and medical staff. The Program Lead of the Simulation, Resuscitation and Outreach Training Center is accountable for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of PEARS, PALS, NRP, ALS, BLS and tracheostomy and ventilator training as well as custom tailored simulation activities. The Program Lead of the Simulation, Resuscitation and Outreach Training Center Outreach/PALS Specialist is a liaison with the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, the McMaster University Continuing Medical Education (CME) and with the McMaster Practical Skills Laboratory. The Program Lead of the Simulation, Resuscitation and Outreach Training Center is also responsible to participate in and implement new initiatives from time to time such as ACORN (Acute Care of the at Risk Newborn). Deliverables include sustaining and growing the program.
Qualifications - External
  • Experience as an instructor for at least one of the Heart and Stroke courses such as PEARS/PALS/ALS
  • Demonstrated dedication to continued education, continuous improvement, process and evaluation
  • Demonstrated understanding of adult learning principles
  • NRP Instructor Certified preferred
  • Applicants must have a background in a regulated medical profession such as Nursing, or Respiratory Therapy, or have comparable qualifications such as an international medical graduate.
  • Computer office support software knowledge - ie. databases, spreadsheets, presentation software
  • Excellent critical thinking/ problem solving/decision making and conflict resolution skills
  • Willingness to learn new skills, supportive of change management
  • Strong leadership and excellent presentation skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Some knowledge and experience of simulation applications including debriefs
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiating, facilitating, consensus-building and teaching skills
  • Minimum level of education is a Bachelors in a regulated medical field, however preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Minimum five (5) years Pediatric experience

Unit Summary
On behalf of McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH), Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS), the Program Lead of the Simulation, Resuscitation and Outreach Training Center provides leadership for MCH staff and the community hospitals in the Central South Region in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and ongoing coordination of the numerous clinical outreach programs. The role has 3 main focuses: 1) training and certification in the following programs: PEARS, PALS, NRP, ACLS, BLS and tracheostomy and ventilation for community providers; 2) Simulation and mock code training for our internal MCH programs and; 3) Training and simulation activities to support our community hospitals in the region.
