Rainbow Railroad is an international organization, based in both Canada and the United States, whose mission is to help LGBTQI persons in danger find safety. Our ultimate goal is a world free of persecution based on sexual orientation, gender identity or sex characteristics. Until then, we provide solutions for individuals in immediate danger of persecution or violence amidst a global refugee crisis. In partnership with a global network of LGBTQI organizations and human rights defenders, we coordinate directly with individuals experiencing violence to get them out of harm’s way. Around the world, we are recognized for our efforts to support and protect the thousands of LGBTQI people living in countries which criminalize their existence.
THE ROLE
We are seeking a full time Financial Officer to support our finance department. We’re looking for a highly organized individual with strong financial skills to support the management and maintenance of financial information for the organization. The Financial Officer is responsible for various aspects of financial reporting including monthly, quarterly, and year-end functions. This position requires attention to detail to manage bookkeeping in two countries.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Daily, Weekly and Monthly Tasks
- Review and verify transactional documents, such as invoices, receipts, and purchase orders, and ensure proper documentation and authorization.
- Perform month-end closing procedures, including reconciling accounts and preparing financial statements.
- Maintain fixed asset schedule and perform depreciation calculations.
- Participate in the annual budgeting process, providing financial insights and recommendations.
- Responsible for the complete month end cycle of accounting including but not limited to; preparing and posting daily journal entries, conducting balance sheet reconciliations, managing the accounts payable process and preparing monthly management reports.
- Assist in the preparation of year-end financial statements and working papers for external audit.
- Prepare and post daily journal entries, including recording revenue and expenses, and ensure accuracy and completeness of data.
- Prepare and distribute financial reports to management, highlighting key insights and trends.
- Maintain Accruals and Prepayment schedules
Accounts Payable Tasks
- Track invoices outstanding, make payments after obtaining the necessary approvals and be able to communicate status of accounts payable to departments.
- Work with the finance team to develop an accounts payable system.
Reporting Tasks
- Support the drafting of budgets for special projects and government funding applications.
- Support government funding reporting - coordinate with internal and external partners to collect required information and ensure that reports submitted to the government are correct and complete.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory & tax reporting requirements.
General Tasks
- Collaborate with colleagues to streamline financial processes and improve efficiency.
- Assist in implementing accounting software and technologies to enhance bookkeeping processes.
- Provide support in analyzing financial data and preparing ad-hoc reports as requested.
- When necessary, act as a backup to Senior Finance Officer and Finance Director.
- Stay updated on relevant accounting standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Comply with all provincial and federal government reporting and legal requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary education in a related field.
- 2-4 years general accounting and finance administration experience
- Understanding of issues relating to the mission of Rainbow Railroad.
- Understanding and promotion of anti-oppressive practices
- Able to work independently but also as part of a team.
- Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks online and MS Office or G-Suite.
- Sound judgment, tact, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent communication (oral and written), time management and organizational skills.

- Supports the work and strategy of the management team
- Reports to Director of Finance

Hiring Salary Range – $60,000-$72,000 plus competitive benefits
