Overview
Reporting to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, the Director, Marketing and Communications, will be a key member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) team and support for the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and Executive Team.
The Director, Marketing and Communications will oversee the delivery of all internal and external communications for the CPA in both French and English, including policy and advocacy campaigns, governance and leadership communications, publications, and marketing campaigns.
Working closely with the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, the Director, Marking and Communications will develop the overarching strategic narrative and key messaging for the CPA and ensure that all communications are designed to align with and support this narrative.
The incumbent will lead the development of the annual departmental operational plan by creating and delivering engaging communications and marketing campaigns to support the successful achievement of the CPA’s organizational goals, in alignment with its 2023–2025 Strategic Plan. Using the operational plan as a guide, the Director, Marketing and Communications will be responsible for leading the communications team in developing strategic communications and marketing plans and researching, writing, editing, designing, executing, and evaluating all internal and external communications for the CPA, across all channels. This role will also be responsible for monitoring and reporting on all communications and marketing–focused KPIs relevant to the achievement of the Strategic Plan.
In addition to executing Association-wide communications tactics and plans, the Director, Marketing and Communications will function as a support provider to internal departments and CPA’s key stakeholders and components to ensure consistency across planning and messaging, where appropriate. In particular, they are responsible for maintaining a detailed understanding of the operations, objectives, and needs of the professional practice and advocacy teams and work collaboratively with the Senior Director, Policy & Research and Senior Director, Advocacy to develop targeted and strategic communications that support the CPA’s policy and advocacy goals.
Responsibilities
Management and Strategic Planning
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge on the evolving political, regulatory, economic and social issues relevant to the physiotherapy profession and the Canadian health care sector
- Manage the day-to-day communications budget, including but not limited to recommending spend, soliciting quotes and RFPs, negotiating project estimates, and submitting and approving invoices
- Provide strategic advice and analysis to colleagues across the organization
- Manage and maintain relationships with key vendors including agencies, translators, graphic designers, and others
- Act as a liaison and service provider to the CPA’s key stakeholders, partners, components (Branches, Divisions, and Assemblies), and members
- Stay abreast of the issues relevant to the CPA’s key partners and stakeholders, and foster strong working relationships with stakeholders across the partnership ecosystem
- Oversee the work of the entire communications and marketing team, including resource planning, work allocation, coaching, and evaluation
- Measure, track, and analyze data analytics, trends, and performance across all communications initiatives and report on KPIs on a regular basis
- Liaise directly with the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer in the development of the operational plan for the marketing and communications department
Strategic Communications and Marketing
- Under the direction of the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, lead the development of organizational key messaging and storytelling for the CPA
- Monitor, anticipate and support the Executive Team in effectively managing organizational risks and issues
- Oversee the tracking and execution of all communications and marketing support requests from internal colleagues and component groups
- Leverage key CPA stakeholders as subject matter experts and consultants to ensure CPA communications reflect the unique perspective of our membership and stakeholders
- Lead the communications and marketing team in the research, development, and execution of bilingual content across social media, website, newsletters, and publications
- Review, edit and approve all relevant internal and external CPA communications
- Establish relationships with media, conduct targeted media outreach, respond to media inquiries, and act as a spokesperson for the Association
- Work cross-functionally with the professional practice and advocacy teams to ideate, develop, execute, and analyze communications strategies and key messaging to support policy and advocacy goals
- Work cross-functionally to develop and execute communications tactics, plans, and strategies that contribute to a consistent voice and narrative in support of the CPA’s Strategic Plan
Skills and Requirements
Essential
- Experience effectively managing multiple priorities and deadlines
- Proven understanding of communications and marketing insights/trends
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, business, or another related field
- Experience developing and executing unique, targeted communications strategies with measurable, outcome-focused success
- Comfortable in a high-performance, fast-paced culture
- Experience performing data-driven performance measurement and analysis
- Experience with strategic communications planning, staff management, and vendor management
- At least 10 years of relevant government, not-for-profit, or agency experience in communications and/or marketing roles
- Experience and proficiency with MS Office, Mailchimp, HootSuite, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Canva and/or similar communications and marketing platforms and services
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, and experience delivering a wide variety of communications content (speeches, press releases, op eds, letters, website content, marketing collateral, social media content, etc.) across multiple channels
Preferred
- Experience leading policy, advocacy, and/or government relations–focused communications plans
- Fluent bilingualism (English and French)
- Familiarity with or experience working within the not-for-profit sector and/or the Canadian health care sector
