We are looking for a Director of Software Engineering based out of Manulife’s Toronto or Waterloo office who will help lead a Group Benefits Technology Team responsible for Digital Products.

We Are Looking For Someone With


  • Multiple contexts and engineering languages.
  • Strong relationship-building skills to build effective working relationships with business unit leaders.
  • Experience with digital health businesses, services, platforms and / or assets
  • Good verbal and written communication; able to effectively articulate technical vision, possibilities, and outcomes.
  • Confidence, maturity and credibility to deliver and present to AVP+ audiences
  • Familiarity with Agile and DevOps principles, test-driven development, continuous integration, and other approaches to accelerate the delivery of new features.
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to translate complex technical solutions into fundamental concepts.
  • Prioritizes efficient code production by using open-source frameworks and patterns.
  • Familiar with platform technologies, modern software architectures and API-driven development, and scripting languages.
  • Working knowledge on any of the following: Languages such as JavaScript, React/Redux, NodeJS, GraphQL, Kafka and/or similar technologies
  • 5+ years leading engineering teams and building diverse and inclusive engineering culture where team members are highly collaborative and willing to learn and grow.
  • Experiments with emerging technologies and understanding how they will impact what comes next.
  • 8-10 years related engineering experience with expectation that you are a hands-on practitioner.
  • Good organizational and problem-solving abilities that enable you to manage through creative abrasion.
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle and how technology supports business strategy.


On The Job You Will


  • Drive our hiring and recruiting efforts as applicable for our diverse teams.
  • Coaching and Mentoring junior engineers.
  • Lead engineering efforts in Manila including working closely with the leadership team to progressively mature our practices and continually improve all aspects of the software delivery process with the aim to progressively augment the velocity of the team. This includes the ongoing management /of team performance, adherence to best practices and non-functional areas such as security, reliability.
  • Encouraging a high-performance engineering culture that embodies Manulife’s values.
  • Act as a local brand ambassador to establish Manulife as a destination for tech talent.
  • Work in close partnership with other segment technology leadership team to embed the right hiring, agile and engineering practices.

Salary & Benefits


The annual base salary for this role is listed below.


Primary Location


CAN, Ontario, Toronto, 250 Bloor Street East


Salary range is expected to be between


$105,070.00 CAD - $195,130.00 CAD

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training. Employees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance.
