The opportunity
The Director of Data Engineering and Analytical Insights is responsible for managing a team of 5 data solution specialists and data scientists to further advance Manulife’s people analytical capabilities and to generate timely insights to drive workplace decision making and targeted business outcomes.
Reporting to the VP of Global HR Strategy, Transformation and People Analytics, this critical role will lead in the development of the HR and Communications’ (HRC) data analytics road map and improve the data platform strategy with a focus on data modeling, transformation and visualization. This role will help establish data models and coordinate the development of data pipelines to extract and integrate data from various Manulife sources and our cloud enterprise data lake (EDL) to support insight generation.
In addition, this role will help advance the end-to-end journey from data extraction through to sophisticated analytical insights with a keen eye on innovation and using new technologies while ensuring strong governance and compliance.
Responsibilities
  • Partner with Audit and Business Continuity partners in meeting evolving standards
  • Continuously improve and optimize data platforms and models; lead all aspects of and support new and existing data pipelines with our Global Functions Technology partners
  • Act as an internal advisor by understanding business needs, scoping data requests, synthesizing insights, and recommending solutions
  • Develop sophisticated data modeling, transformation, and visualization solutions to meet HRC’s emerging data needs
  • Apply Microsoft Workplace Analytics/Viva Insights and Organizational Network Analysis to drive adoption, user experience, and to get the most of these tools
  • Support new requests with agility by using an ‘MVP-style’ approach - releasing improved iterations in a scalable way
  • Improve self-serve analytical capabilities by ensuring standardized data sets are available to partners in a consistent and consumable way
  • Exemplify ethics and uphold all data privacy and compliance policies
  • Partner and leverage the Corporate Advanced Analytics team on key projects and initiatives
  • Lead team resources and capacity planning to ensure multiple concurrent projects, objectives, and achievements are met
  • Lead all sophisticated insights work and hypothesis exploration by applying expertise in quantitative analysis, data visualization and data modelling to help advise, support, and implement people decisions
  • Improve data visualization capabilities to build consumer grade experiences for partners
  • Implement thorough and focused documentation for all products and processes
  • Develop internal team capabilities and own the talent pipeline

What We Are Looking For
  • Confirmed problem-solving skills with the ability to capture information and breakdown sophisticated problems to identify cause and effect relationships and patterns

  • 10+ years of applicable experience in Data and Analytics and/or Consulting/Advisory with a track of record of dynamic leadership
  • Solid project management and delivery skills capable of keeping the team organized to complete multiple opposing priorities
  • Education in quantitative fields and/or work experience in a field that emphasizes analyzing, displaying, and reporting on data (e.g., computer science, math, engineering, economics, statistics, psychology)
  • A domain authority that is plugged in to the latest trends through peer networks and the industry overall; a validated understand of what’s happening with the workforce and the external market
  • Executive level presentation and facilitation skills and good interpersonal and leadership traits to facilitate working with colleagues at all levels
  • Ability to think conceptually and exercise flexibility and judgment in assessing business issues in a multifaceted environment (multi-region, multi-business)
  • Demonstrable understanding of HR policies, initiatives, programs and HR data sets (engagement, turnover, diversity, etc.) is preferred
  • Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to apply a structured approach to extract, navigate, and mine substantial amount of data in order to uncover hidden patterns and insights
  • Familiarity with industrial/organizational psychology, behavior science, organizational network analysis (ONA), survey design, employee sentiment, etc.
  • Comfortable with PowerBi, Microsoft Viva Insights, Workday
  • Previous experience working in a global matrix and regulated environment is an asset
  • Ability to build positive relationships within HR and the Business and actively seeks out opportunities to establish and maintain a network of contacts internal and external to the company
  • Demonstrable ability to partner effectively and collaborative across HRC, Group Functions Technology, Corporate Advanced Analytics, Strategy, Finance and other areas of the business

Salary & Benefits
The annual base salary for this role is listed below.
Primary Location
Toronto, Ontario
Salary range is expected to be between
$100,500.00 CAD - $180,900.00 CAD

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
