Construction Manager Jobs

Reporting to the District Manager, Northern Ontario, the Construction Manager provides overall administrative and technical expertise and support on a variety of projects and is ultimately responsible for the Project Managers’ performance in their projects’ budget, schedule, general performance and profitability. The successful candidate will be familiar with the Northern Ontario market and will have a background in ICI construction (Industrial, Commercial, Institutional and/or Water/Wastewater projects). While this role will be based out of the Sudbury office, the Construction Manager will be required to travel to various project sites across Northern Ontario (approx. 40-60% travel).

RESPONSIBILITIES

·Provide exceptional service to clients, suppliers, and other stakeholders by responding professionally and with a sense of urgency.

·Act as an ambassador of the company both internally and externally.

·Maintain excellent relationships with owner, architect, consultants, subcontractors, and the public.

·Ensure projects meet corporate goals for safety, quality, budget, schedule and profitability.

·Assist in securing new work by participating in estimates, working with subcontractors and/or participating in proposals and presentations.

·Ensure project safety standards and environmental programs are adhered to at all times.

·Mentor, coach, and supervise Project Managers and project staff.

·Monitor and assess the performance of the project and the Project Manager.

·Assist in all aspects of project planning, estimate reviews when required.

·Maintain labor relations – liaison with unions and labor subcontractors.

·Ensure optimum utilizations of subcontractors and suppliers.

·Project performance: monitoring of schedule, costs, equipment, manpower, materials, equipment maintenance and inventory, safety & environment and quality control.

·Manage, control, and guide and training scheduling.

·Review project status reports and information on specific incidents with President & CEO.

·Assist in negotiation of claims/disputes with the owner and subs/suppliers.

·Oversee project close-out.

·Develop long lasting client relationships by managing client expectations, ensuring construction activities are aligned with customer requirements and identifying opportunities for repeat business.

·Supervise, mentor, coach, and train project personnel.

·Provide guidance and stewardship of project processes and documents, such as project set up, bid packages, subcontract management, drawings, purchase orders, contracts, building permits, change order requests and pricing, RFIs, RFQs, close out etc.

·Manage quality of project accounting and billings, including project billings and signoff, subcontractor payment certificates, service/work order billings, monthly progress draws and client invoices.

·Manage quality and accuracy of project information (including all of the above) in a computerized project management and accounting system (Viewpoint).

·Liaison with building authorities and regulatory agencies.

·Manage the deployment of safety, quality and environmental control plans and compliance.

·Perform other relevant duties as assigned to meet business unit and organizational objectives.

REQUIREMENTS

• Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines.
• Demonstrated success in project delivery and execution of project management methods.
• Familiarity with Labor relations and collective agreement management.
• Ability to read blueprints, schematics, field drawings and plans.
• Strong communication, leadership, integration, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
• A solid understanding of all construction trades and construction techniques.
• Results-oriented individual with the ability to interpret and effectively manage multiple and competing priorities and timelines.
• Superior leadership qualities with a demonstrated track record of dealing successfully with internal and external customers.
• Knowledge of local, provincial and federal workplace compliance regulations, ordinances and legislation, including OH&S regulations and Building Codes.
• First Aid skills and/or certificates are considered assets.
• Superb creation and facilitation of meetings, feedback sessions, and briefings to create consensus among stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise necessary cost control measures.
• Ability to travel to project sites and off-site locations throughout Ontario as required.
• Ability to work safely in a construction environment.
• Possess a valid drivers’ license.
• Able to effectively communicate with all types of staff, including laborers, technical, professional, and upper management.
• 10 years of proven experience in project management from project pursuit to project close out, overseeing commercial construction projects (hard bid, AFP and/or negotiated).
• Post-secondary diploma/degree in Construction, Building Technology or Engineering.
• Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with business units, corporate departments, key managers, and other stakeholders.
• Strong management, delegation, planning and leadership skills.
• Familiarity with project accounting systems, Viewpoint an asset.
• Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, MS Word, and Excel.
• Commitment to working in a team environment, with established team building abilities.
• Highly effective negotiation, diplomatic, and conflict resolutions skills.
• Understanding fundamentals of contracts and experience in managing contractors under the terms of a contract.
• Effectiveness in the areas of construction safety and productivity.
• Technical Diploma, Professional Engineer, C.E.T. Gold Seal Constructor or PMP.
