Position Description


You will work with and lead a community of engineers who plan, execute, and deliver capital projects to support the manufacturing and processes of our plants. An advanced understanding of engineering principles, project management tools/techniques, technical scope development, business case analysis, cost/budget estimation, scheduling and calculation of CPI, SPI and NPV are required. We seek a qualified and energetic engineering and project management leader to work with a collaborative and high-performing team while keeping safety paramount. We need individuals to develop and execute our continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on engineering and project management best practices.


Overall Responsibility


The successful candidate will leverage their experience and knowledge to work with and develop a passionate performing team to deliver projects on tight timelines, on scope and within budget. Apply and further develop engineering and project management expertise to implement problem-solving skills. Work with internal and external stakeholders to promote teamwork while working in the plants and the office environment. Identify, develop, and lead the implementation of technical solutions that deliver significant business value to the company. Address problems by identifying and developing implementable and cost-effective technical solutions with the ability to mentor others at all levels of the organization.


Accountabilities
  • Plan and define all required construction activities including constructability, cranes, lifting plans, shutdown planning/scheduling, commissioning, and quality management plan.
  • Communication - Conduct regular meetings with project team (engineering, vendors, manufacturing, procurement) and issue meeting minutes with action items.
  • Senior Project Manager capable of leading large (>$25M) multi-discipline, complex project or multiple medium sized projects ($5.0M to $15M) from inception to completion.
  • Change management – Manage all project changes to scope, schedule, and budget relative to the investment file utilizing the PCR process.
  • Cost Management - Manage the projects within budget. Provide monthly cost forecasts and updates to follow cashflow targets.
  • Drive/Coordinate construction engineering with discipline engineering groups.
  • Initiate collaboration with co-workers and partners to identify improvement initiatives for project development and execution.
  • Compile monthly project status reports and report out proactively as appropriate or when requested by the management.
  • Routinely demonstrate the expert technical knowledge, skills, experience, and qualifications to estimate, plan and complete all tasks in an expert manner without direction from others.
  • When delegating and directing others, provide leadership, direction, and mentoring to ensure the successful completion of the following tasks.
  • Risk Management: Complete Risk and opportunity assessment during project development and maintain/update throughout the life of the project.
  • Identify, justify, specify, develop and implement benchmark technical solutions to bring financial benefits in the delivery of the projects.
  • Closeout – Captured lessons learned and perform timely project close outs.
  • Implementation - Coordinate procurement with purchasing, including expediting, FAT, delivery, and contract management.
  • Guide the projects team through project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring & control and closeout processes aligned with ArcelorMittal Capital Investment Project Methodology (CIPM).
  • Able to recognize, develop, implement, and maintain expertise in the knowledge areas.
  • Project Resourcing – Identify and request discipline engineering by using the discipline request process. Identify any budget for any external resources, including construction and commissioning management.
  • Schedule – Approval of projects as required in the capital plan and deliver per approved schedule, including delivery of benefits.
  • Share technical knowledge with, and mentor engineering and personnel from other departments including leadership.
  • Project Development - Development of project investment files, including business case development, scope (i.e. alternatives, selection & justification, definition and boundaries), process and cost benchmarking, cost and schedule estimates, implementation plan, and project risk analysis that covers all of these items. (meets the investment file timeline, basis of estimate with contingency and allowances for uncertainty, approved on time, cost estimate accuracy, WBS utilization, baseline schedule, risk register & management, project implementation plan).


Qualifications
  • Excellent communication and rapport building skills with technical, leadership and management personnel at all levels, including delivering of presentations to senior level ArcelorMittal executives.
  • A Master’s degree in engineering or MBA is preffered.
  • Strong ability to integrate work with teams.

  • Ability to develop project plans for project execution by self or others.
  • Flexibility to determine workday start and end times, to fit personal needs.
  • On your first day you will immediately be eligible for:
  • Expert knowledge of project & construction management in a heavy industrial environment is required. This includes:
  • Strong understanding of steel industry manufacturing processes, business processes and the competitive environment.
  • Requirements of all engineering disciplines, including application and management of the project engineering process. Knowledge of your academic discipline is an asset.
  • Application of Construction management standards, including kick-offs, Safe Work Permit Process, Multi-discipline Commissioning Procedures, H&S Standards, including application of the Ontario Health & Safety Act & Regulations.
  • Normal hours of work are daytime, Monday to Friday, with occasional extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads and special project commitments.
  • Ability to identify improvement opportunities and implement industry-leading / benchmark solutions.
  • PMP certification is considered an asset.
  • Bonus paid quarterly based on Company performance on key goals. Your bonus target will be 15% of base salary earnings.
