Job Summary

The Ministry of Forests is responsible for the stewardship of provincial Crown land and ensures the sustainable management of various natural resources. The Ministry manages these resources in a manner that embraces economic, environmental and social goals of government.


The Ministry's Forest Improvement and Research Management Branch (FIRM) work involves tree improvement activities that help manage and conserve BC's forest genetic resources and provide quality tree seed for the reforestation of Crown land. FIRM's research management activities provide the leadership, coordination and support functions that are required to sustain a strong research program within the Ministry.


The provincial Tree Seed Centre (TSC) is a mission-critical facility located in Surrey. All of the tree seed used for Crown land reforestation in BC is registered, tested and stored at TSC. TSC processes more than 95% of the cones and seeds collected in BC wild stands and seed orchards on a fee-for-service basis.


The Finance and Administration Clerk provides a variety of financial, contract and administrative services to support finance and business operations at the provincial Tree Seed Centre. Highly organized, you capably prioritize and manage your workload to meet deadlines, using your outstanding eye for detail to ensure all work is carried out to a high standard. You are an effective communicator, able to successfully establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of partners and demonstrate initiative and good judgment in applying procedures within established policies and guidelines.

Job Requirements


  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with other staff and clients.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively organizing and managing a diverse workload.
  • Demonstrated administration experience, i.e., reception, preparation of confidential or sensitive materials, event arranging, etc.
  • Diploma or certificate in a financial or administration program and three (3) years of current (gained over the last five (5) years), progressive and directly related experience in finance and administration; OR, an equivalent combination of training and experience such as secondary school graduation and five (5) years of current (gained over the last seven (7) years), progressive and directly related experience in a financial environment.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in accounts payable using an automated accounting system to enter data, generate financial spreadsheets and reports.
  • Experience in payroll processing involving regular and/or seasonal staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial and contract administration including, processing, reconciling and reporting.


Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:


  • Experience using the BC government's Corporate Accounting System (CAS).
  • Experience using Time and Leave Management (TALM) for payroll processing involving regular and/or seasonal staff.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent.


Provisos


  • Physical ability to tolerate exposure to hazardous environments for short period of time (extremes of temperature, noise, air movement, organic dusts/moulds, heavy machinery and moving equipment) to access some files and supplies in storage in the back plant areas and to deliver phone messages of an urgent nature.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry moderate weights, up to 20 pounds, for short distances to unload and store paper supplies and stationary orders.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
