Automation Engineer Jobs

The regional Senior Automation Engineer will assist with the development and implementation of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) projects, production, processing methods and controls. Through the application of engineering fundamentals and advanced process control tools, this position will ensure that processes are centered, capable and in control; reduce process variations; and resolve special causes variation. This position will provide leadership and innovation in the implementation of strategic initiatives and capital projects related to process, automation, power/electrical and database systems. The Senior Automation Engineer will be accountable for the execution of projects, supporting yield/availability and focused improvements and training/mentoring of staff for multiple sites within Canada. This position will also assist management in developing manufacturing business plans and evaluating new innovative technologies to enhance our current systems.

• Planning and scheduling of projects and preparing capital expenditures.
• Reports directly to the Capital Program Manager and is a member of the Canadian Central Engineering team.
• Provides technical expertise, support and enhancement of automation related systems (PLC / HMI / VFD / Instrumentation / Machinery Safety / Data and Voice Networks / plant electrical distribution systems) and implements required updates to avoid technical obsolescence.
• “Hands-On” problem solver capable of providing on-site and remote support to multiple plants in order to solve complex automation related issues.
• Responsibilities include the designing or development of new process control systems and revising / maintaining of existing processes; developing and implementing WCM projects; managing and guiding contractors, consultants and suppliers; identifying new opportunities and solutions with cost / benefit analysis and making recommendations to improve efficiencies.

Required Qualifications

• Develops and maintains standard operating procedures and work instructions.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Creates and provides training for other automation engineers, operators and maintenance personnel for project hand-off to plant.
• Ability to provide leadership and innovation at all levels of the organization.
• Assists plant maintenance teams with any difficult troubleshooting issues.
• Prepares and maintains data sheets, wiring and Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and flow charts required for the proper and efficient operation of plant equipment.
• Ensures full documentation of all projects and systems to WCM / Early Equipment Management (EEM) standards.

What do you bring?

• Thorough knowledge of Canadian Standards (CSA) for Electrical, Machinery Safety, Arc-Flash (NFPA-70), Burner Flame Safety (NFPA-86) code requirements and combustion controls.
• Expertise in PLC & HMI programming and all aspects of integrated automation and information systems in a manufacturing environment.
• Applied professional experience with electrical process control, instrumentation, automation, industrial protocols / networking (switching & routing) and databases.
• Ten (10) years of applied professional experience in Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) / PLC and power distribution (up to 4160VAC.)
• Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering or similar discipline or equivalent experience.
• Agile, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred qualifications?

• Proficient with Thin Client architectures and VMWare in an industrial environment
• Proficient in AutoCAD Electrical.
• Expertise with Allen-Bradley PLC-5 and ControlLogix platforms
• Expertise with WonderWare ArchestrA, GE/Intellution (Fix/iFix) and Siemens WinCC HMI
