BCAA is looking for a Regular Full-Time Data Engineer!
Please note that this role is based out of our Burnaby, BC Head Office with a requirement to come into office two days a week.
BCAA’s Data and Analytics Centre of Excellence (COE) is a growing team of data scientists, developers and analysts who deliver value across the organization by leading the development of data science, information governance and digital solutions through best practices, research, support, and training for the organization’s analytics community. As a Senior Data Engineer within the DnA Centre of Excellence, you will provide hands-on leadership while working on a cross-functional team that is passionate about innovation and collaboratively solving complex problems.
The successful candidate will work closely with stakeholders across the organization to address business problems and support insight-driven decision making, while working alongside team members within the Data Science and Information Governance practice. Your ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical leaders and team members, and to support the implementation of solutions from self-serve analytics to advanced machine learning will be key to your success.
As a Data Engineer, you will also work closely with BCAA’s Infrastructure and Product & Platform teams in the development of BCAA’s Data Lake, which enables new capabilities for our analytics community to leverage in exploring, developing, and deploying solutions that deliver value within the organization and to our customers. As part of maturing organizational practices, the DnA team provides support and education across various business units around the democratization of analytics and driving a culture of data-driven decision making.
The Data and Analytics CoE is part of a broader Chief Technology and Transformation Office (CTTO) team, which leads BCAA’s Information Services through various initiatives and programs, guided by a customer-centric approach. Our work as a Data and Analytics COE spans across the organization, collaborating with teams in several business units, including Roadside Assistance, Home Insurance, Travel Insurance, Marketing, Evo Car Share and the BCAA Call Centre, to name a few.
Data Engineer/ETL
  • Thoroughly documents assumptions, requirements, methodology, test plans and facilitates knowledge sharing and insight on engineering and usage of new data engineering and data discovery tools
  • Coordinates model-driven process engineering and automation initiatives
  • Develops automated data and metadata processes for leverage organizational insight and action
  • Informs BCAA’s Data and Analytics Operations (DnA Ops) Data Engineering Practice
  • Supports and enables collaboration across the business to democratize information and remove ‘data silos’
  • Analyzes both structured and unstructured data to identify patterns, trends/dependencies and communicate the results to the relevant stakeholders
  • Assists with embedding the use of advanced analytical tools and techniques across analytics teams at BCAA.
  • Works closely with DnA CoE data scientists, BI developers, information governance and business stakeholders to lead data processing solutions that deliver value throughout the enterprise
  • Provides organizational engineering and data architecture expertise; consulting services to design, deploy and maintain systems to enable downstream analytics, ensuring standards and best practices are embedded
  • Designs scalable solutions that are flexible and can evolve within an ever-changing environment
  • Develops solutions that strengthen data governance, security frameworks, data integrations and data integrity.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders at all levels of the organization on a range of business problems, identifying and supporting the implementation of solutions to drive improved business results through advanced analytics
  • Designs & deploys data models and analysis for business processes, data usages (flow), process design and data design.
Qualifications
Education
  • Analytics, Statistics, Data Science a plus.
  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Computer Engineering and related AWS/Azure certifications.
Experience
4 years experience as a data engineer or ETL developer: four years demonstrated experience building data warehouses, scalable data pipelines, provisioning self-serve analytic data models, AWS cloud stack or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Other Skills / Qualifications
  • Experience supporting ML and AI experiments, business intelligence, data science models and reporting.
  • Experience with the following tools/languages for data management and manipulation: Informatica, MapReduce, Rest APIs, Attunity Qlik-Replicate, Scala
  • PowerBI, Tableau
  • Technical competence, you are well verse in data engineering best-practices and industry standards
  • Strong working knowledge of source and target data structures, ETL and CDC processes and products, analysis, troubleshooting, and code review.
  • Proficient in:
  • Proficient handling large and complex data sets in all stages from extraction to modelling, structuring, filtering, discovery, and development of visualizations.
  • Strong analytics background: demonstrated experience with quantitative data analysis and utilizing data to drive decision-making, specifically related to measuring and demonstrating effectiveness.
  • Data engineering champion, proven advocate for advancing core data engineering practices and engaging with the analytics community
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, proven ability to work with both technical & non-technical stakeholders
  • Python, SQL, NoSQL
  • Capability to learn and develop new engineering techniques as required.
  • Experience with Salesforce, Guidewire and insurance industry preferred
  • API’s, Bash scripts
  • AWS stack (certification preferred)
  • Experience leading data projects from problem identification to production.
  • Working understanding of high-volume data processing and analysis, relational and NoSql Databases, and Machine Learning Tools/Frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of foundational statistical concepts
  • Attention to detail and the ability to solve problems through technical solutions.
  • Experience developing, optimizing, and implementing machine learning models in a production environment.
