The ideal candidate will have a passion for advancing neuroscience informatics (neuroinformatics) via the adoption and scaling of advanced data tooling, computing, and AI on the cloud. Candidates should have significant experience working on cloud application management, deployment and support, preferably with experience in the health research ecosystem or similar.
This position will be a great opportunity for the successful candidate to develop their cloud DevOps and application stack management skills, work with new technologies for cloud big data and analytics, collaborate with national and international partners, and significantly participate in supporting the advancement of brain discovery and innovation for health impact.
Key Responsibilities
  • Operate cloud resource budgets with due diligence and planning with the OBI informatics team.
  • Keep abreast of and communicate cloud application and data standards, cloud technology trends and innovation opportunities.
  • Manage and support application user accounts, user access requests, and data preparation for user access.
  • Implement and support cloud Analytics/ML services including virtual machines, analytical computing (CPUs, GPUs, TPUs, etc.).
  • Implement and support core applications and data pipelines stacks on cloud leveraging virtual machines, storage containers, databases, containerized applications, and scalable computing (e.g., Kubernetes, Azure App Services) in accordance with OBI cloud informatics guidelines.
  • Collaborate with third-party DevOps and Security providers, Microsoft Azure partners, and other third-party partners to advance neuroinformatics objectives.
  • Lead technical cloud data and application layers for health research data storage, sharing, and analysis on Microsoft Azure cloud and connected computing environments.
  • Design and implement platform and application services architectures according to cloud best practices for security, usability, performance, and cost.
  • Implement and support data management, cloud data storage services using Azure native and third-party storage solutions, databases, and file systems.
  • Implement and support cloud API stack and micro-service integrations and third-party data federations to facilitate data access, computing access and exchanges.
  • Support the development of OBI cloud application guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as required.
  • Support security assessments, change management, and implement contingency plans for system upgrades while providing impact analysis and recommendation for system updates.
  • Work closely with the OBI neuroinformatics team and service providers with agility and adapt to ongoing requirements changes.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Robust understanding of Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure and platform management for computing, networking, and storage.
  • Experience working with federated identity applications and management (e.g., SAMBA, OAuth, etc.).
  • Experience with cloud applications and storage security best practices (e.g., TLS, VPC, API security, CORS, container security, etc.)
  • Microsoft Azure DevOps, Applications, AI Engineer, and/or Developer certifications an asset.
  • Proven ability to adopt agile methodology for systems design, implementation, and support of cloud applications, data and computing resources, including virtual machines, databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB), containerization (e.g., Docker, Singularity), cluster management (Kubernetes, Azure App Services), REST API integration, and Git code versioning.
  • Experience operating with cloud resource budgets, quotas, and support.
  • Preference will be given to Microsoft Azure cloud experience and certification, however candidates with other cloud experience (public or private) are welcome to apply.
  • Excellent autonomy along with great collaboration skills.
  • Experience with CLI based cloud management and orchestrating infrastructure as code (az-cli, bicep, terraform, etc.), writing shell scripts, files, and ops code for deployments, resource management, keys, cryptography, etc. using security best practices (e.g., bash, python, javascript, java, json, etc.).
  • A strong desire to make an impact in brain discovery and patient health.
  • Possesses excellent analytical and problem resolution skills.
  • 5 to 7+ years of experience with preference given to candidates with health research cloud systems experience; relevant MSc or PhD, an asset.

  • Experience with sensitive data management and ETL (health data experience preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills and English proficiency with a willingness to teach and share lessons learned with the neuroinformatics team.
The Cloud Application Engineer will work alongside the Data Systems Engineer, the Data Quality Analysts, the informatics service providers to OBI, and the broader neuroinformatics team.
We are a diverse, highly energized, passionate, professional and committed team. We offer an exciting workplace with many opportunities for learning. Qualified candidates are invited to submit a cover letter and resume, no later than August 25, 2023.
