Summary


The Associate Director, Teaching & Learning Professional Development (TLPD) within the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technologies (CTLT) provides strategic leadership and domain expertise in the development, implementation and evaluation of professional development activities offered by the CTLT in support of teaching skills development for faculty, graduate students, and staff. The Associate Director TLPD is responsible for advancing innovation in teaching and learning professional development, educational development, and assessment, in support of excellent and inclusive teaching and learning practice. 


As part of CTLT’s Senior Management Team (SMT) the Associate Director works collaboratively with the SMT to provide strategic leadership for the CTLT, and to ensure connections between the work of the TLPD portfolio and other areas of the unit's work in supporting teaching and learning. 


Organizational Status


The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology is a central academic service unit that provides leadership, academic services, and support to the university community in the areas of teaching and learning scholarship, course and program development, learning design, educational technology development, instructional support, and teaching practice development.  


The Associate Director TLPD:  


  • Oversees the work of the Teaching and Learning Professional Development (TLPD) team.  
  • Reports to the Academic Director, CTLT.  
  • Liaises regularly with academic leaders across UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan, including Provost’s offices and Faculty Dean’s offices at both campuses, UBC Okanagan’s Centre for Teaching and Learning, and senior University administrative staff and other academic and instructional support staff.  
  • Works in partnership with the SMT providing strategic advice and guidance on unit-level matters.  
  • Liaises with individuals and organizations outside of the institution, where relevant for the work of the TLPD portfolio. 


Work Performed


Provides strategic leadership, planning, and evaluation of campus-wide teaching and learning professional development initiatives, including: 


  • Creates and fosters effective relationships and partnerships within the institution to support teaching and learning professional development programs, services, and resources. Consults with members of the university and other groups and organizations on current models and effective practices related to development and implementation of professional development approaches in higher education and applies these in the UBC context.  
  • Provides vision, develops strategies, and oversees the development of comprehensive plans for a broad-based portfolio of professional development programs, seminars and workshops, resource development, and community engagement of faculty, graduate students, and staff in support of the university's teaching and learning mission.   
  • Advances innovation in educational and learning design, in support of the strategic goals of the institution, as well as those of CTLT. 


Collaborates with other CTLT SMT members to provide leadership for the unit to further decolonization and reconciliation efforts, as laid out in UBC's Indigenous Strategic Plan. Guides the TLPD team’s work to further the realization of reconciliation in teaching and learning across the University. 


Collaborates with other CTLT SMT members to provide leadership for the unit to further equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) as laid out in UBC’s inclusion and anti-racism plans and frameworks. Guides the TLPD team’s work to further the realization of EDI in teaching and learning across the University.  


Collaborates with other CTLT SMT members in strategic governance and budgeting processes for the CTLT, collaboratively setting the unit’s goals, projects, and budget priorities and ensuring effective collaborations across teams in the unit. 


Leads the Teaching and Learning Professional Development (TLPD) team. Creates and maintains a respectful and inclusive team dynamic and working environment that brings together different ideas, experiences, skills, and knowledge to meet strategic goals of the unit and the university.  


Leads managers and staff in the understanding of university and unit strategy, goals, and objectives. Translates the strategy of the CTLT SMT into actionable plans, ensuring the overall intention is understood and that outcomes are achieved. Ensures the clear establishment of goals for staff and monitors and evaluates staff and unit progress towards these goals. 


In consultation with the Academic director, makes decisions around people and financial resources to support the work of the team. 


Teaches and facilitates online, multi-access, in-person and blended courses and workshops for faculty, graduate students, and other interested parties within UBC and the broader community. 


Represents CTLT interests on university-wide committees in relevant areas. 


Represents UBC’s interests and coordinates participation in relevant inter-university teaching and learning working groups and committees.  


Performs Other Related Duties Or Special Projects As Required. 


Consequence of Error/Judgement


The Associate Director plays a pivotal role in setting the overall strategic direction of the CTLT and makes decisions regarding planning, educational and learning design, faculty and TA development, assessment, evaluation, and research which could impact significantly on the student, faculty, and staff experience across UBC. Errors in judgment may result in the inefficient use of resources, the provision of substandard educational experience and may consequently damage the image, mission, and reputation of the University and CTLT.  


Supervision Received


Works autonomously under broad strategic direction of the CTLT Academic Director. 


Supervision Given


Leads the TLPD team directly and indirectly through subordinate managers. 


Minimum Qualifications  


  • Master's degree in education with a specialization in curriculum development or an academic specialization relevant to the educational programming area. 
  • Minimum of ten years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Proven people leadership and management, consensus building, negotiation, team building and organizational skills.  
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including probing underlying issues to generate multiple potential solutions and facilitating buy-in. Ability to proactively anticipate and prevent problems. 
  • Substantial experience in designing and facilitating in-person, multi-access, hybrid, and online instructional programs and courses. 
  • Demonstrated capacity for self-reflection; looks back at setbacks and/or failures and identifies and applies key learnings for self and others. Solicits and acts on feedback.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.  
  • Ability to conduct needs analyses, plan, organize, manage, monitor, complete, and evaluate projects and ongoing operations within allocated time and resources. Ability to analyze and interpret data, determine implications, and provide recommendations. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work well as part of a team, and to support effective collaborations within and beyond the unit.  
  • Ability to effectively facilitate resolution of conflict by identifying underlying differences and resolving conflict openly and empathetically. 
  • Significant experience creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive working environment.  
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own. 
  • Demonstrated track record of supporting reconciliation efforts in teaching and learning, such as those as laid out in UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan, and to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) efforts, such as those laid out in UBC inclusion and anti-racism plans. 
  • A strong understanding of educational development in a post-secondary context, which could come from multiple possible ways, including through education or related experiences.   
  • Experience leading large and diverse teams.
