UBC Sauder’s Learning Services (LS) team supports faculty in the pursuit of teaching excellence with services and resources to facilitate the design, development and delivery of effective and engaging learning experiences in face-to-face, blended and online environments.
The Director, Learning Technologies provides management and technical leadership for all aspects of Learning Services, including technological innovation and support for curriculum and pedagogical innovation and design, educational technology, development of innovative learning spaces, and learning analytics in association with the Dean’s Office. The Director manages the overall unit planning, budget and resources tasks that deliver technology systems, projects, enhancements, maintenance and production support for delivery of undergraduate, graduate, and professional/non-credit programs.
Organizational Status
The Director, Learning Technologies reports to the Senior Associate Dean, Students and works closely with program managers and faculty across UBC Sauder. Collaborates with the UBC IT and CTLT leadership teams, campus stakeholders, vendors and external institutions. Manages the Learning Services team, which includes instructional designers, media production specialists and faculty support liaisons.
Work Performed
  • Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.
  • Provides overall leadership for the UBC Sauder Learning Services department. Leads and/or oversees development and delivery of innovative solutions, programs and services to enhance the students experience, faculty efficiency, and overall reputation of the school.
  • Leads the development of new applications and the integration of these applications with other UBC systems and services.
  • Contributes to the ongoing strategic planning of the unit.
  • Analyzes and reviews systems features and functional, integration, acceptance, security, operational, scalability and performance requirements. Provides specialized technical expertise in implementing technological solutions to meet research, teaching and administrative needs.
  • Anticipates and analyzes trends in pedagogy, educational technology and learning spaces, and assesses the impact of emerging technologies on the teaching and learning community at UBC Sauder.
  • Leads the implementation of systems design for optimal reliability, performance and efficiency. Ensures that best practices are maintained.
  • Participates in long range planning for application projects, and develops and maintains technology roadmaps for learning technology and learning analytics.
  • Manages the staff performance assessment process. Establishes clear service expectations and outcomes based on organizational strategy and takes corrective action to ensure ongoing availability of critical services.
  • Designs solutions to resolve system-related issues, meet user requirements and streamline system work flows.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Develops working relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders across the school and university, providing expert advice on committees and initiatives to optimize solutions, programs and services are addressing functional requirements and strategic objectives.
  • Conducts formal system audits and develops written procedures, standards and practices to ensure a high level of availability, security, data integrity, accountability and hardware/software compatibility.
  • Identifies implementation options, evaluates risks, benefits, complexity and flexibility of the various options. Discusses approaches and recommendations with unit heads, systems owners and users, and makes appropriate technology decisions for new and changing systems requirements.
  • Leads and communicates change initiatives within the organization and the successful adoption of learning technology solutions.
  • Develops and manages functional area budgets, prepares cost/benefit evaluations and ensures for cost efficiencies.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Systemic problems resulting from poor execution of the work performed can result in massive loss of faculty productivity and have critical consequences for teaching workflow. Makes decisions regarding management and operations of a major functional area of a distributed, complex information technology infrastructure across multiple sites. These decisions are vital to the UBC Sauder School of Business ability to achieve its strategic goals. Makes decisions which affect UBC Sauder's ability to deliver undergraduate, graduate and continuing professional development business programs. Learning technology and program delivery must meet the standards of external accreditation bodies to maintain and increase UBC Sauder's standing as a place of academic excellence.
Supervision Received
This position receives guidance and support from the Senior Associate Dean, Students. Works independently and assumes full responsibility for decisions.

Manages a team directly and indirectly. As required, provides project management to employees and contractors who are assigned to a project team.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. In-depth knowledge of applications and the business requirements supporting them. Minimum of five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience implementing, managing, maintaining, monitoring, securing, and trouble-shooting user services.
  • Thorough knowledge of all operating systems common in heterogeneous academic computing environments: UNIX-like (RedHat, Ubuntu, Solaris, BSD, etc.), Windows, macOS. Experience in systems and application programming using both compiled and scripting languages. Familiarity with various desktop environments (Windows/macOS).
  • Ability to conduct needs analyses, plan, organize, manage, monitor, complete, and evaluate projects within allocated time and resources.
  • An up-to-date understanding of changes in learning technology approaches, emergent opportunities, and best practices.
  • Ability to manage and lead a team of professionals and the ability to work with a wide range of diverse teams and individuals and to foster a collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to explain complex concepts.
  • An in-depth knowledge of applications and the business requirements supporting them or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to translate information, system and business needs to the appropriate technologies.
