Job Description
Position Overview
The Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking five (5) Full-time Regular Teaching & Learning Technical Specialists.
This position reports to the Manager, Schulich Studios at the Schulich School of Engineering, and will strategically support teaching in the Schulich Studios. The goal of this position is to support advancing experiential learning with a specific focus on first-year common core course.
There are peak periods of workflow at the start of each semester (September, January, May, July). Work hours are typically weekdays between 8:30am to 4:30pm. However, there may be occasional times where work is required outside of regular hours to support live Schulich School of Engineering specific events and other teaching and learning initiatives. This position is on-campus and not suitable for remote work schedule.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Provide updates about what needs to be repaired or replaced, for classrooms to remain functional for teaching.
  • Coordinating the necessary inventory for the lab, testing and maintaining lab equipment and maintaining the rooms/space functionality.
  • Collaborate with Technical Manager for task delegation and training of Internship
  • The Studio Technician will ensure that the room, inventory and equipment for the specific course is prepared for classes, they will support student experiential learning and online content.
  • Working with the Academic Faculty Course Coordinator, updating lab sheets from the coordinator and ensuring that experiments are prepared in advance.
  • Provide in-class / in-lab support for active learning in the Schulich Studio which will match the class schedule.
  • Provide training to support Academic Faculty with teaching & learning, specifically demonstrating the functionality of technical equipment in classrooms.
  • Collaborate with Technical Team to Support Labs
  • Collaborate with technical services and Tech Manager, to support necessary maintenance for classes.
  • Participate in SSE committees and/or department discussion related to technology and learning spaces and contribute to project renovations for learning spaces.
  • Creating a standard operating procedure for the lab, including ensuring that inventory is available, lab kits are created in non-teaching time periods.
  • Maintenance and inventory of laboratory equipment for the respective course, including scheduling any required maintenance during non-instructional time periods.
  • Support a specific first-year common core course by working with the Studio Manager and Course Coordinator to provide active learning support for the students.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Desired experience in supporting a teaching & learning environment and a passion for experiential learning is required.
  • The successful candidate must have the ability to support the Academic Faculty Course Coordinator with experiential learning, providing technical support for labs, experiments and in-class learning.
  • A positive student centered focused approach, creating student resources to support the Schulich Studio approach to active learning.
  • Engineering undergraduate or master’s degree, in any discipline, is required.
  • Highly self-motivated and self-managed; ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team with minimal coaching or supervision.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including instructional, facilitation, and presentation skills.
  • Strong ability to collaborate efficiently with other internal business units and external partners.
  • Knowledge and experience in post-secondary contexts is considered an asset.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a rapidly changing work environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and scheduling abilities, and the ability to lead implementing solutions using the innovative application of technologies and platforms in SSE.
  • The Schulich Studio Technician will support a specific first-year common core course (one of) ENGG 200; ENGG 201; ENGG 202; ENGG 204; ENGG 212; ENGG 225 or ENGG 233. Specific knowledge in one of these areas, is essential.
  • Strong working knowledge of various operating systems, multimedia programs, productivity software, communication tools and networking concepts, experience with these skills in an educational setting considered a strong asset.
