Job Description
Position Overview
The Alka & Sanjeev Khanna Engineering Career Center in the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Career Advisor.
The Alka & Sanjeev Khanna Engineering Career Center provides career planning and employment preparation services to engineering students by providing a number of programs including, but not limited to: Career exploration programs, experiential learning programs (such as practicum & the academic program, internship), employment preparation seminars, career planning advising, and online modules for skills development related to the professional job application processes.
As Advisor, this position reports to the Manager, Student Experience and is a part of the Engineering Career Centre team.
The Advisor provides and coordinates professional job search developmental training, coordinates internship program activities, administers the practicum program, delivers program and career success seminars and events for engineering students in the Alka & Sanjeev Khanna Engineering Career Center. This position works within the Engineering Career Centre and will often coordinate activities within the University of Calgary Career Services office to help students be successful in their search for professional employment (example: Internship positions, student summer positions, new graduate positions).
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • The Advisor will administer our Engineering Practicum Program, which is an early-career preparation program. This includes liaising with employers, providing student feedback, and reviewing D2L content on the certificate course.
  • The Advisor uses highly analytical skills and in-depth knowledge to develop and provide students with the necessary advice, programs and services to guide them in their pursuit of professional experience and employment.
  • Coordinate Job Discovery Days during fall and winter reading weeks.
  • Advertise and market services of the Alka & Sanjeev Khanna Engineering Career Center to our engineering students, using support from Communications, Schulich School of Engineering.
  • Develop program content, implementation and delivery of the Engineering Career Centre programs to assist engineering students on a diversity of topics such as negotiation or job-search strategies.
  • The Advisor will support the academic program, Engineering Internship through processing applications, overseeing job postings, and liaising with potential internship employers.
  • The Advisor will be proactive in staying current with employment documents, interview practices and professional best practice in order to understand, monitor and convey all aspects of job application procedures for all student cohorts.
  • The advisor will consistently monitor and answer email communications to shared inboxes from students and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborating with other stakeholders, coordinate large-scale campus events such as Tech Fest, Capstone Design Fair, and APEGA Seminars
  • Develop and utilize the website, newsletters and social media to engage both employers and students.
  • Using APEGA Core Competencies as a guide, the role will develop key metrics for career readiness. They will regularly analyze data and articulate the impact of programs on student employability.
  • Design and conduct quantitative and qualitative program evaluations, produce regular reports based on these evaluations, recommend and institute program changes when required.
  • Hold regular “Career Pop-up” to provide students with resume/cover letter guidance and internship application processes
  • The Advisor will work with Continuing Education to ensure proper data management and student progression in the non-credit coursework.
  • The Advisor will facilitate and interpret a variety of skills, personality and interest inventories, as well as guide students to develop accountability for their decisions and an understanding of how those decisions impact their success.
  • Draft, post and update web registrations for the seminars.
  • Maintain our “Standout” online interview practice tool, ensuring that video questions are up to date and provide students with ongoing feedback on interview skills.
  • The advisor will identify key industry trends and develop programs to support with student career exploration.
  • Utilize the new grads survey feedback to analyze trends and data then share information with students and employers.
  • Coordinate core activities of the Internship program through eligibility reports, student communications, database maintenance and job postings
  • Review job postings for their suitability for internship, summer, and post graduation employment.
  • The Advisor position will be responsible for the design and management of job-readiness programs:
  • Coordinate the Alka & Sanjeev Khanna Engineering Career Center and organize Job-readiness Success Seminars with facilitation when required (resume, cover letter preparation and interviewing skills presentations).
  • The Advisor will work within the Engineering Career Centre to provide best practice advice to students, preparing them to be successful applicants for postings within the Engineering Internship Program, summer placements and post-graduation careers. Additionally, they will regularly work with Employer Specialists to ensure industry partners are provided opportunities to attend events and coach students.
  • Ensure industry participation at events and workshops through ongoing relationship building and upkeep of the industry partner database (Orbis)
  • As an expert in advising, the Advisor will research and make recommendations relating to the strategic development and delivery of an engineering-specific job search advising programming.
  • Keep statistics on the numbers of seminars held and students attending the seminars. the incumbent would be using the Orbis system.
  • The Advisor will play a key role in the retention and success of U of C engineering students, from the point of acceptance through to successful completion of their degrees. Drawing on an in-depth understanding of student development theory, academic advising, coaching techniques, the primary responsibilities related to job search advising will be to assist engineering students in applying for and preparing to be interviewed for jobs in the engineering field.
  • The Advisor will also be considered a member of a dynamic, student-centric advising team in the Engineering Student Centre, to support engineering student job search success through developmental advising and offering support services to engineering students, all the while collaborating with the University of Calgary Career Service office where possible.
  • Ensure communication channels, such as shared email accounts, are answered and organized consistently
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • 5 years experience with student services, HR processes, or job recruitment advising is required.
  • Expertise in the area of group-learning facilitation; in selecting and developing relevant facilitation methods (including support material) and in training student staff in relevant areas.
  • Ability to successfully handle a large, intense student workload with a positive student-centric attitude demonstrated by 3 years professional experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP)
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, and developing original ideas to solve problems, demonstrated with professional experience.
  • An undergraduate degree is required with 5 years of experience in student career advising, graduate degree considered an asset.
  • Familiarity and 3 years experience with facilitating skills to assist students with job search success.
  • Excellent computer skills including experience using technical advising tools (such as student information management systems like People Soft or Orbis, Degree Audit software and Microsoft Office), and a desire to learn and implement new software/programs.
  • Proven (2 years experience) ability to conceptualize, design, and implement new approaches to undergraduate advising and programs.
  • Strong critical thinking, judgment and decision making skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet strict and multiple timelines, working flexible hours to meet student needs.
  • Experience developing and providing presentations for students.
  • Demonstrated ability to be resourceful, creative, innovative, and flexibility to work effectively individually and as a team member.
  • 2 years work experience and knowledge of Orbis, Mentorlink, D2L, and Peoplesoft required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to exceptional, proactive student service
  • Ability to assess program effectiveness, analyze data, and report on metrics to highlight impact of programming
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills, including written, oral, one on one and group as demonstrated by professional experience
