Position


The Learning Technology Specialist position (0.5 FTE) is an integral part of a team that provides assistance for faculty members/instructors, support staff, and students (grad/undergrad) in the integration of digital technologies into teaching, research, administration, and/or other professional work. The Learning Technology Specialist reports to one or more Learning Design Consultant(s). The successful candidate will have a high level of educational technological knowledge, with strong skills in an extensive range of applications and educational software. They must have significant practical experience in applying technology to teaching, learning, assessment, research, and administration. A theoretical understanding of applying modern teaching strategies including constructivist, student-centred, active, and problem-based learning approaches is necessary.


The ideal candidate will have exceptional customer service skills and some office experience. They will need to demonstrate flexibility, organizational skills, problem-solving, communication skills, and the ability to prioritize.

Duties


  • Coordinates with faculty, the Learning Assessment Centre, Accessibility Resources and provides support for online exams
  • Assists Learning Consultant with supporting the Technology Coaches and the front desk
  • Supports the development of courses and programs using a blended, online or web enhanced format
  • Serves as a technology ambassador to gain support and involvement in the unit’s programs
  • Works closely with other team members to ensure such material, tutoring and support is available in the Technologies in Education Learning Commons when needed
  • Communicates current and emerging issues and uses of technology
  • Provides consultation to instructors and staff regarding ethical and/or philosophical issues relevant to educational technology (eg. equity, copyright, plagiarism, privacy, safety, etiquette, and responsible use)
  • Consults with individual, or groups of, faculty or staff to provide appropriate technology solutions
  • Maintain accurate records and logs interactions
  • Designs and develops appropriate documentation, tutorials and other learning materials to support workshops, seminars, one-on-one coaching as well as independent learning
  • Coaches and mentors individual faculty members and instructors as they integrate new technologies into their teaching and research
  • Supports the media team with videoconferencing setup and needs
  • Designs and develops digital learning objects to enhance course development and delivery
  • Engages in video editing in conjunction with the media specialist
  • Supports digital exam creation and delivery


Qualifications


  • Polite, courteous, punctual, flexible, dependable, and professional
  • High level of ICT technical knowledge, with strong skills in an extensive range of application and educational software and various specialized hardware tools
  • A theoretical understanding of and practical experience in applying modern teaching strategies including constructivist, student-centered, active and problem-based learning approaches is beneficial
  • Audio and video recording and editing (an asset, but not required)
  • Experience with and proficiency in the following:
  • Significant practical experience in applying technology to teaching, learning, research and administration, and demonstrated familiarity with best practices and trends for ICT use in education.
  • EClass (Moodle)
  • Web Conferencing tools
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working with learning design or 2 years experience in online resource design and development, teaching OR 2 years experience integrating ICT in education as an instructor
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • SMART board technology (an asset, but not required)
  • Web 2.0 tools
  • Google Apps
  • Office experience or experience working in a post-secondary setting considered an asset
  • MS Office suite
  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Education or in a related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
